Great to hear in certain newspapers today that wor Al has been close to accepting a few managerial positions recently. I hope he finds a position at a club in the lower leagues soon to ply his trade because tactically it's evident, on MOTD and in his short spell with us, that he's not up to scratch for the prem yet in that regard. However, i believe he will be a superb man manager and will bring loyalty and graft to any team he manages, especially Newcastle. Therefore if he finds a job soon I would relish having him in charge here in 5-10 years' time, as he would show what true loyalty and commitment to the club means. He could just be in the mould of sir bobby, having worked under him and having a similar no nonsense, old fashioned attitude that has proved so successful for bobby himself and the likes of ferguson at united. Shearer as gaffer and hughton as assistant by 2020? Sounds ideal! <party>

I hope so. He's only 40 now, so if he gets 10 years of managerial experience under his belt by the time he's 50, he could have moulded himself into a pretty good manager who would always have the clubs best interests at heart.

He'd need experience though. I don't know why people thought he would be an epic manager when he did it for us. He'd never managed a team in his life, and being managed IN a team for 10 years doesn't just make you a good manager. You've got to ply your trade. In fact, the only manager I can think of who's went from playing almost straight into successful management is Pep Guardiola. Everyone else has needed at least a few years before they've found their way. Some of the most successful managers today have needed many, many years.

It does make you wonder how well Shearer would have done if he was made manager of a team already doing reasonably well. It's unfortunate that his first attempt was with a relegation bound team who were in a deep downward spiral. I'm not sure if anyone could have pulled them out of it.

Great players don't necessarily make great managers but it would be interesting to see how AS would fair managing a team in the lower divisions.
He cannot be judged on his spell in charge of us as most experienced managers would have failed to save us. Shearer really let his heart rule his head on that one.
It shows that he has ambition though, because many people would not want to give up a cushy number at MotD for the stress and insecurity of football management.

Am I the only one who thinks he'd be a ****e manager?

He was a great player and a great captain 'cause he led by example but he has about as much charisma as a silent fart! People say he would be a good motivational man-manager...Are you forgetting the shower of ****e that was Villa away? We strolled around the pitch and he looked powerless and clueless!

I'd like him to be good, in fact no, I'd LOVE him to be good...But honestly? If you want an ex-player to come back and be a success then look no further than Lee Clarke!

i'd hate for him to come back and ruin his legendary status and i fear he would be ****e most top players can rarely transfer from great player to great manager. but good luck to him cos he was a great servant for the club

Wouldnt want him to come here until hes been 100% tested elsewhere and is ready, the relegation day really was a mackems wet dream.... our legend Shearer coming in and taking us down couldnt have been better, no way would I want to go through that again, its embarrassing.

He should have went into assistant managing before looking to go solo, in my opinion.

Spoke about this on another thread. He needs to learn his trade lower down the leagues. I suggested being Lee Clarkes assistant as he is doing brilliantly, but he has Terry McDermott with him so cant see that happening.

Would love for him to prove himself as a canny manager and then come and be a success here. Would hate for him to not get enough experience, get the job here because his playing career and end up **** as ****.

Hopefully is Chrissy Boy gets a championship job he will look to Shearer as an assistant!

I'm not sure on him as a manager yet, he's had next to no experience yet and I'd only want him if he does well!

I do agree to an extent however, we surely can't blame Shearer for the shower of **** he inherited and the players he had to choose from at Villa.
We were a team full of mercenaries going through a farcical period and nowt he done could of changed that. Even by our standards 6 games isn't enough to change a balance of what was a diabolical team.

Agree about Lee Clark but would also love to see big Al back at some point.
