When he was talking about Tiotes contract he said something that got me thinking..

He said 'The owner doesn't wish to dip into his personal fund' Or something along them lines..

Why? Why buy a football club if you're not willing to spend ANY money on it? Why spend £100 Million for something then just let it rot from the inside out, but also does this mean that the £35 million will defiantly be Pardews? Since he doesn't want to spend his own money this gives him a perfect excuse to not do that. I hate the man to sum it up. And I commend Hughton for lasting longer than a year.

He has spent money on it though. He's spent a lot of money out of his 'personal funds' already and it gets to a point where the club starts paying for itself. This is now.

With the wage structure, less big money buys and bargains and the money from Carroll. Ashley is slowly making it one of the best run clubs in the premiership.

When these new laws come in we'll have a massive advantage over like 12 other prem teams. Just give it time.

Don't we have to start operating within our means anyway? For financial fair play.

To be fair he's invested a lot more than £100Mill and basically he's saying what most football club owners say, they want the club to be self supporting. If we make it into Europe in the next couple of years we'll have to be fairly much self supporting because of the new regulations UEFA and Michel Fatini have put in place.

As others have said we have to live within our means anyway due to the new UEFA rules. (I'd like to see how strongly they enforce them mind, can't see them stopping Man Utd or Barcelona from competing in Europe)

OFF Topic: Did anyone else hear Pardew say something like "I'm going to lean on Mike's passion to get more money from him" Dirty man.

Aye, I think Ashley saw the potential we had, but was naive in his buying of the club...We still have that potential and with sensible, steady investment (what appears to be happening now) we'll soon achieve it.

With regards to 'putting his own money in' does this not simply mean he is spending the Carroll money on contracts, rather than his own...'cause that doesn't sound at all unreasonable to me?

There comes a point where a club has to be run on its own income and without continual external investment. If you look at it from a business perspective, it makes perfect sense. Getting someone to keep ploughing in money is completely unsustainable.

I'll give Ashley some credit if he gets the club to the point where it's cash rich and in a very healthy financial position - perhaps even turning over a nice profit.

I agree. Financially we are definitely heading in the right direction under Ashley and along with Arsenal seem to be the only ones making a serious attempt to put in a sustainable business model. Time will tell but I think we will see some benefit in the years to come. Some of the other teams however could be heading for trouble (Spurs, Liverpool, Villa, Sunderland etc) if they keep spending the way they are.

I only hope Ashley can start running the other areas of the club as effectively.

Wouldn't look too much into this. It's confirming what we already knew. Personally I haven't got a problem with Ashley adapting this policy, I'll be very happy if we get £35 million to spend in the summer. <ok>

Interesting, so basically clubs will need to start doing well financially by next year?

Yes basically. So any team which for instance pays £35m for one player and pays wages of £80k per week is seriously going to struggle. As far as i'm concerned let the other clubs ignore these rules if they want. In the long run they will suffer and the teams like us and Arsenal who are trying to run a tight ship will be ok.

Better to be safe than sorry. Wouldn't want to get into financial difficulties like some poor clubs and get a points reduction that could see us drop down a division.

I know it's very unlikely but it's the kind of thing that could happen and has happened to some clubs.
