Newcastle are considering a £10million swoop for Russian playmaker Alan Dzagoev.

Toon Army boss Steve McClaren admitted he wants to quickly bolster his side after their loss at West Brom, which leaves them in the drop zone.

He is hoping to bring in new players quickly after the transfer window opens on Friday. And CSKA Moscow's Russian international attacking midfielder Dzagoev, 25, is on United's hit-list.

The Beslan-born ace burst onto the Russian Premier League scene in 2008, starring in the Russian Cup Final as the Moscow side defeated Amkar Perm.

Injuries have hampered his progress since but he has performed well this term to help CSKA top the league going into the winter break.

Manchester-based lawyer Saide Moussallati is now working on a deal to bring the Russian to the Premier League in January with other clubs also interested.

not sure its what we need at the moment but seems a decent player, just wish we were looking for someone with premier league experience!

We need a defensive midfielder to replace Colback/Anita/Tiote. We have Gini, Sissoko, De Jong and others who can play the attacking midfielder position. No one is effective at sitting deep and doing the dirty work.

To be fair though only Gini can play that playmaker role. Sdj is too attack minded and sissoko just doesn't have intelligence or guile. He is pretty thick.

I do think a centre half with pl experience would be massive at this stage. I also think a left back is an obvious priority. Then ass general Lee says a true defensive midfielder would be good. One with aggression, height and presence. We may have to look outside the league for both centre half and defensive midfielder though as I can't see many available to a strong relegation candidate. We have got ourselves in a right hole here. Should have been sorted in the summer

The other concern is who play left if Gini moves into playmaker role? Thauvin? Not shown a lot and not really fair to expect him to just click all of sudden regardless of money spent on him. Do we then need to go and get someone from here? Demerai gray? Still young though. Should have seen if puncheon fancied it in the summer

I think Thauvin has shown he has the quality but just needs the time to settle in! To me he is a proper winger but when we play with 2 DM then the winger role is pretty limited especially when backed up by slo mo dummy

Reality is thauvin has shown little. There may have been the odd flash of quality but just chucking him in because we are desperate and have done poor business just feels like selling him down the river. We are up **** creek and suddenly he is the paddle - he needs time and even then I'm not convinced. We probably need and few experienced players to dig us out. If thauvin is chucked in I can see how it will go - he will be scapegoated in the usual fashion when it won't actually be his fault, more the process

To be fair though, our fans scapegoat each and every player that does not perform 10/10 on their debut! Thauvin has shown he can do it, problem is 10 minutes here and there won't suffice.

Yes we are up **** creek and he needs the chance (not just one game either) - if we don't sort out our defence then we are truly fecked this time.
