Just seen the entries for a couple of the Aintree races:

Tidal Bay (16/1) and Time For Rupert (12/1) both entered against Big Bucks in the Liverpool. Seems a bit of an odd manouever, especially as, in my opinion, Time For Ruperts Gold Cup was one of his best showings, I'd expect him to line up in the Bowl (which he also holds an entry to) - anyone know otherwise?

If he turns up, he's got to be good EW value, as has Smad Place at 6/1 - can't see him out of the first three with none of Oscar Whisky, Thousand Stars, Voler la Vedette or Dynaste lining up...

As for said Bowl: Riverside Theatre (3/1) looks about fairly priced. Burton Port (6/1) seems good value, but not as good as Poquelin (20/1) - without a run at Cheltenham he must be good EW value there.

Anyone fancy Hunt Ball (8/1) - price seems very harsh? To be fair I think they'll go to the race at Cheltenham - the step up to Grade 1 can wait till next season I'd have thought.
 
6/1 EW value? I can't see him winning so you are betting at long odds on for Smad Place to place. I think that has to be a dreadful price.

I actually think with PP going 1-2-3 EW Restless Harry would be the most interesting at 20/1, having run well behind Big Bucks in the past and more than likely to run in the race. You could end up with a field of 6 with the bet paying three places.

As for Time For Rupert, I thought Webber said that he was putting him away after his good Gold Cup effort, so surprised to see him entered in both the Bowl and the hurdle.
 
I'm going on Thursday, my first visit to Aintree and can't wait to see a living legend in Big Buck's. I expect him to go off at around the 1-4 mark based on that field - I think plenty will come out and none of those entered look anywhere near his class. I expect him to strollto his record 17th straight win.

I'm sure Time For Rupert will go for the Bowl <ok> and Tidal Bay probably joins him

I think Nicholls wins the Matalan, just not sure which one yet - Dodging Bullets or Pearl Swan. Be interesting to see what Ruby rides.

The Bowl looks wide open and I can't help thinking Nicky Henderson is going to have Master Of The Hall spot on for this after swerving Cheltenham. I'd be wary of backing any of the Gold Cup flops and I'm not sure the Ryanair horses will get it. The race often throws up a surprise. Nacarat also been aimed at this.

Sad to see My Way De Solzen taken out of the Fox Hunters, gave him a bit of a squeak. Expect Gwanako to take all the beating.

In the Red Rum Handicap I'd love to see Paul Carberry get the ride on Bellvano again - a match made in heaven and the horse remains unexposed.

In the Manifesto I am hopeful Pepite Rose takes her chance against the big guns - I love this mare and think she would have a cracking chance here. Obviously Cue Card should go well.

Crikey - what a cracking days racing <cracker> can't wait.
 
my first ever visit to aintree too, on the friday. ladies day. :D . Don't even know what the card is like other I get the Topham which I'm hoping to get right by a fence for.
 
If they all turn up, the Bowl will be a cracking race, on a par with this year's Ryanair. Haven't seen any odds on the Net but will be very interested in Alberta's Run as a CD winner and Weird Al could be a good price after disappointing in Gold Cup.

Very attached to Countryside Flame after an ew success on him at the Festival although there's not much between the leading 4y0's. However coming from Northern yard it is likely he'll still be a good price against the Nicholls and King contenders. Triumph winners have a good record at Aintree so will stick the Flame.

No decent oppo to Big Bucks apart from Smad Place so win no 17 should be a penalty kick. If they are going chasing with him next year would have loved Ms Russell to pitch in Brindisi Breeze against the Big Boy..shame

It's a short price, but I think he's a better horse than the rest of the field (Big Bucks excepting, obviously, and also TFR who may or may not go), and I think he'll win the race for second place.

Nicholls said he might enter Pearl Swan in the 2m4f Novices hurdle Oddy, so that might be an interesting prospect. Can't fancy him to beat Simonsig though, much as I'm a Pearl Swan fan.

Have you see James Pyman's piece in the Racing Post today?

The Triumph Hurdle has about the worst record of any Championship Festival race at Aintree with the exception of the Gold Cup (and possibly the Albert Bartlett). A heft level stakes loss from backing top 4 finishers at Aintree anyway.
 
Can't see Countrywide Flame winning at Aintree or winning a Group 1 again. I'd happily be proven wrong but I think the Triumph was a shocking event this season and that the race kinda fell into his hands.


Aintree is usually the place to take on Cheltenham heros but Cheltenham threw up so many unexpected results for me personally that I'm at a loss with selections for Aintree at this moment in time. I will have some ideas just before it starts I think, but have totally forgot about Cheltenham these past two weeks.

I did not read the piece but Mr Pyman should do his research better. Of the last 7 Triumph winners they are 3/4 (Detroit city, Katchit and Zarkandar) Celestial halo was unlucky to come up against Binocular who most regarded then as the superior 4yo. Soldatino didn't go to Liverpool and nor did Penzance. Zaynar did not go to Aintree but his narrow victim, Walkon won there by 12 lengths. So in short I don't know what he's on about . Of course all of those winners went off at short odds because they came from big yards so he's right that there's not much of a profit to stakes ratio

Were the Flame trained by Henderson or Nicholls he'd be short odds. Having said that I wouldn't be so keen on him if the ground comes up too soft. I'm suprised McCain hasn't put Hollow Tree in as he'd be a solid punt if the rain keeps coming

Their record appears decent but you make a loss from backing them.
 
I do like Grumeti on the thursday and will be intresting to see where Dodging Bullets enters, but I think Grumeti was bit unlucky at the triumph! and is nailed on to win on thursday
 
Hello Ron...In good form and had a very solid Cheltenham. I've been about but didn't know of this forum till stumbled across it on internet search . hope you're well. do you still habitez en France ?

Zenyatta - i can't really comment as didn't see his figures. But your quote refers to backing top 4 finishers which is spreading the net too wide anyway. If you'd backed all the horses i list above [classing Walkon as a Triumph winner in Zaynar's absence], you'd have 4 winners from 5 since 2006 and a modest SP profit to a £1 stake of £5.66 (113%).

I declare a bias as I backed Countryside Flame at Cheltenham based on speed figures and value so I am now very fond of the nag as it was my biggest priced Festival winner in years . Thus i get offended for the horse (i know.. how daft is that ! ) when people brand him a poor winner, which is a lot to do with his unfashionable connections. Whether he will train on is another matter. He is highly raced as a four year old and like Katchit he might peak very early

I too will be going George... Cant wait... Hopefully the ladies will be dressed up to the nines as per usual...

Plus its a good days racing as well...<ok>
 
The racing throughout the old &#8216;Aintree Festival&#8217; is top notch these days and it is foolish to only concentrate solely on the Grand National as quality action can be found in almost every heat. For the past 2 terms, in fact, my biggest bet on the Saturday, of the meet, has not been in the GN but in other races on that day &#8211; Tataniano in 2010 and Montbazon last time around. Whilst last year, of course, Mr Henderson&#8217;s amazing feat of saddling the first 3 winners on the day overshadowed even the big race as commentators and pundits rushed to praise a momentous and truly stunning achievement.

This time around I&#8217;m so looking forward to Medermit finally going over 3 miles on Thursday in the old Bowl (will do so unless we get an abundance of precipitation).
