Ainsworth thanks QPR fans for 'fantastic' salute
Aug 1 2012 By Greg Burns

    Gareth Ainsworth

GARETH Ainsworth thanked the QPR fans for the reception he got when he made his cameo in their pre-season friendly game at Wycombe.

The 39-year-old played 150 times for Rangers and got a standing ovation from the 2,500 away fans who travelled to Adams Park for the friendly last night when he came off the bench for the final 30 minutes.

It was a touching tribute to the Wycombe player/coach who admits he will probably hang up his boots at the end of the season.

He said: “I had a lump in the throat and a few goosebumps because it was a fantastic time when I was at QPR and to be remembered after all the success they have had in recent years as one of the guys who got them up to the Championship was fantastic.

“I thank all of those who came out tonight and it is something I won't forget.

“Everyone special to me was here tonight and that was a big thing for me. Some of them travelled a long way from Blackburn to be here and I count every Wycombe fan and every QPR fan as special as well.

“It was brilliant to see so many QPR fans coming out. It would be nice to think they all came for me but I am sure they came to see their team and I hope they do really well this year.”

Former Hoops boss Gary Waddock also took on his old side last night and was delighted to see Ainsworth get the recognition he deserved.

He said: “The reception he got was outstanding and thoroughly deserved in my opinion. I was really pleased for him.”

Legends don't stop being Legends simply because they move on to other clubs.

Wolfman, you'll always be a True QPR Hero.

Watching him play on Tuesday was a blast from the past. It felt like only yesterday.

I can see where you're coming from and I'm a big fan of the swashbuckling style of both JM and GA. But... Ainsworth didn't have half the strength and guile that Mackie has and Mackie has only a tiny percent of Ainsworth's character which is what endeared him to us.

Great to see Gazza again! He put in a couple of stunning crosses as well.

But what a top top bloke. Just seen the interview on the offish, he seems really pleased with the reception - and what a good one it was!

Nice to see Ephraim gave him his shirt at the end (Ephraim was wearing the no11- gazzas old no)
