Can we liken AI to the industrial revolution, which did away with a lot of manual work as machines could do it more efficiently?

AI is doing the same to office jobs and professions.
Yes, I'd say there are similarities.

But there also huge differences. We were the driving force behind the industrial revolution. We were essentially the "givers", and in a very good financial position.

We are now the "takers" if you like.

Also, AI requires truly staggering amounts of power, and as we have the most expensive electricity prices in the developed world, this will badly hamper the development of AI here. We will be left behind as others are opting for cheaper and more constant electricity provision.

Maybe a more recent and relevant comparison would be the way blue collar workers have been affected in the last, say thirty years. Automation, off shoring and other factors have had a huge affect on these semi skilled, unskilled, process operator kind of jobs.

Up to now, the administrative, middle management, consultative strand of jobs has been relatively untouched. But a whirlwind of change is coming to those in these jobs.

If used carefully and correctly, AI could mean groundbreaking advances in medicine or technology, which is what it should be mainly used for imo.

Just seems to be mainly used for social media posts - "this is what I'd look like as a cartoon/caricature/action figure/etc"

aye i remember when it was first mentioned, never liked the idea of it then and still do not...business' will obviously use it as much as they can, less wages they need to pull out, we have seen a lot of this already with the self serve checkouts and such.

we lost best part of our big business' through the 80's and really the only thing that kept the jobs going was bloody call centres...here's hoping they find a new alternative, quickly.

I don't like AI chatbots. Sometimes I just feel like I'm going around in circles or the "pick a response" doesn't match what I'm trying to ask.

Then I lose my rag and swear at them which they don't understand.

These are the free to use versions Becs. They have their uses, but they aren't all that really.
But the newest versions, which require a subscription, are getting extremely efficient and are being more widely used.
