Agyemang Shocked at Being Excluded from 25

    Ben Kosky/London 24

QPR striker’s ‘shock’ at being left out of squad

QPR outcast Patrick Agyemang admits it came as ‘a big shock’ when he was omitted from Rangers’ 25-man squad earlier this season.Agyemang, who is currently on a month’s loan at Millwall, featured in two of the Rs’ first three Premier League fixtures, only to be axed when the club submitted their list of 25 on September 1.

And the 31-year-old striker, who is in the final year of his contract at Loftus Road, was astounded to receive no prior warning of his fate from Rangers manager Neil Warnock.

“I’d played the last two games before the transfer window shut, so once the window had passed I thought I was going to be involved,” Agyemang told london24.com.

“I wasn’t told anything beforehand. Obviously the manager had a boost in the budget, he was able to bring in whoever he wanted and that’s what happens in football, but it’s upsetting when it happens to you.

“It was a big shock and I was low on confidence because of the situation. You’re just training for yourself, really, because you know no matter how hard you work you can’t get into the team.

“Now I’ve just got to get on with it and my loyalty’s to Millwall at the moment. I’ve got to keep fit and try and make an impact – I can’t really worry about QPR.”

The Ghana international is one of Rangers’ longest-serving players – he joined them in a £350,000 move from Preston in January 2008, and immediately struck a purple patch with eight goals in six matches.

But injuries and the frequent changes of manager hampered Agyemang’s efforts to hold down a regular place in the side and the majority of his 19 appearances last season came as a substitute.

Now he is aiming for a new lease of life at the Den – although his arrival has coincided with a major improvement in Millwall’s form, with Darius Henderson and Jay Simpson both among the goals in their recent three-match winning run.

The resurgent Lions followed up their 3-0 victory at Leicester with back-to-back home successes against Ipswich and Coventry to move clear of the Championship relegation zone.

“Basically, just speaking to the manager, Kenny Jackett, made me keen to come down and I’m enjoying it, even though I haven’t played as much as I wanted to,” Agyemang added.

“Obviously I played with Jay at QPR and I used to play up front with Darius at Gillingham about seven years ago, so I’ve got a good relationship with those two.

“We’ve got a good variety of strikers in the squad and competition for places, so that brings the standard up a bit. Every striker wants to get goals, but it’s also important to be part of a team that wants you.”

He's gone to Millwall, hasn't played and they've started winning and scoring goals for fun!It looks like the players have turned round to each other and said"**** me if he's here on loan things must be really bad, let's pull our socks up and start playing".As a shock tactic it was a masterstroke!

Jay Simpson, I'd almost forgotten about him. Never made it at the Gooners then.

Ninj, tell him to put the left boot on the right foot and vice versa that might work.

Its worth noting that the article says he is one of our longest serving players and only here since 2008. WOW

I think you've underestimated Agyemang; not as a player - he's crap - but as a self-publicist/bullshitter/playa. He needs another contract, he needs to big himself up and what better way than to remind everyone he played premiership football this year? He and his agent are doing what they have to. Good luck to him, if only for the 'tear in the fabric of reality' that allowed him to score those goals at the start of his rangers career.

MILLWALL LOOK unlikely to extend the loan deal of striker Patrick Agyemang after leaving him out of the squad that beat Coventry City.

Josh McQuoid is now fully-fit while John Marquis and Shaun Batt are also closing on first-team returns, meaning the Lions may allow Agyemang to return to QPR when his loan expires after Saturday’s game at Blackpool.
