This Saturday 1st October 2011, Gillingham FC travel to Kingsmeadow, for the League Two game against AFC Wimbledon. My first earliest recollections of Wimbledon, was actually nothing to do with the Gills and was certainly way before the Wombles troubles in later years, it was as a young lad, via a tv screen and newspaper headlines in 1975 (before the days of the internet and sky tv), when Southern League Wimbledon, were to take on the reigning First Division Champions (Premier League) Leeds United in the FA Cup fourth round. The one name that springs straight to mind from that match was the then Wombles keeper Dickie Guy. Dickie Guy saved a Peter Lorimer penalty to secure a replay after a 0-0 goalless draw. My first visit to Plough Lane was not to be until the 1983-84 season in the (old) Division Three, an easy one to remember, because it was the final away game of the season, we won 3-1 but the Wombles were already promoted. So now a visit for Gills fans to Kingsmeadow which only has a capacity of 4,720, so the Gills subsequently had already sold their allocation of 750 tickets by Monday 26th September, leaving many more Gillingham fans disappointed and to avoid tickets being purchased by the Gills fans in the home stands of the ground, further sales were withdrawn from online by Wimbledon football club... http://www.gillingham.vitalfootball.co.uk/article.asp?a=256951 Wimbledon regained status to the football league last season 2010/11, after a promotion play off final, penalty shoot out. The winning penalty was scored by none other than the current Gills striker Danny Kedwell. Kedwell who moved to the Gills in pre-season, is currently their top scorer with four goals, his first two goals from open play finally coming against Burton Albion last Saturday (24th September 2011). Keds is now partnered up front with new one month loan striker Frank Nouble, who has scored two goals in his first two matches for the Gills (Hereford & Burton). This will be a tough match for sixth placed Gills, up against a side that currently sits in the place below them seventh in the table. Jack Midson is Wimbledon’s current top scorer with 6 league goals. The Wombles although unbeaten in their last two games, have not had it all their own way, despite their league position, having lost at home 0-3 to Northampton Town on the 13th September, Bayo scoring from a penalty. With Wimbledon’s worst defeat so far this season being at Macclesfield when they lost 4-0 on the 27th August. Gillingham have scored nine goals in their last two matches, which saw the end of a less than favourable four game winless spell before that. So this should prove to be an exciting encounter, with only goal difference separating the two sides that are both three points off top spot, with the season fast approaching the quarter way mark, three points for either side is going to be vital in their search for promotion this season. http://www.gillinghamfan.com/4/post...n-v-gillingham-saturday-1st-october-2011.html
Wimbledon have won 2, drawn 1, lost 2 of their home matches this season. Gillingham have won 2, drawn 1, lost 2 of their away matches this season. All very even so far. Wimbledon have scored 10 and conceded 10 at home this season. Gillingham have scored 10 and conceded 8 away this season. Still looking quite even. This game has draw written all over it. So Gills to win 1 - 2.
brb can I just say what a good write up this is. The personal bits in it give it far more depth than many pieces will be able to achieve. Nice job. UTG
