Saturday 21st January 2012, after a League Two tie at Priestfield against AFC Wimbledon was such an occasion. Being a traditional and very passionate lower league supporter, AFC Wimbledon despite being the opposition, held a faint small place in my heart. The reason for this is the club and particularly their fans have stood strong in their fight to regain league status. Despite being against all the odds and all the greed that exists in the modern game, they seem to have succeeded. It was no surprise therefore on entering the ground to look across to the Brian Moore Stand, to see it occupied by 1,163 travelling supporters. Remembering this is League Two football and the biggest following at Priestfield all season. Even Premiership side Stoke City, could not muster this many fans for their FA Cup third round tie against us. Yes use excuses of cost, travel and bigger clubs to watch but this is what your lower league supporters are all about. Respect to the Don fans, because they sang their hearts out during the game, more often so than the Rainham End. So the game gets under way and within four minutes debut boy Gavin Tomlin opens the scoring for the Gills. However, it seemed for the next 20-30 minutes that the Gills were put under pressure, with Gary Richards having to rescue a situation with an outstretched leg, to prevent a certain Wimbledon goal. In fairness the result probably should have been evens at half time but for some reason, probably tactically, the Wimbledon players finishing was questionable. The second half begins and on about 53 minutes, probably the best goal at Priestfield this season. Tomlin involved again with a magnificent through ball to recent permanent signing Jo Kuffour placing the Gills 2-0 up. Luke Moore pulls one back for the Dons and strangely you just felt as a Gills fan, that the one goal lead was not enough. So on 61 minutes when Tomlin found the net again and put the Gills 3-1 up, it felt like game over and an excellent new partnership up front in Kuffour and Tomlin. However, things are never that simple, we are Gills. What happened next will be debated for many days to come. A few substitutions and tactical changes by Andy Hessenthaler, led to what can only be best described as a complete collapse. We can argue about penalty decisions and poor defending but when that fourth goal hit the back of the net for Wimbledon, yes Wimbledon, their fans erupted with such passionate noise at 3-4 you knew it was their day. I heard an interview where Hessy will watch a DVD with the lads, obviously to see what went wrong. May I suggest the only part of the DVD you watch is the frame where the Wimbledon players and fans were celebrating their fourth goal. It is all in the heart. So yet another Saturday coming away from the ground and having to ask myself, what happened?
