In an attempt to get away from football and all the pain that is currently coming with it, here is a thread about anything to do with advertising. Anything goes..... Best ads Worst ads Stupid ads and why do so many people fall for advertising campaigns. Let me start.................... You have your Sky digi box and lovely flat screen TV that is possibly HD ready but without an HD signal is just a "good" quality picture. Why then do Sky advertise HD viewing on to your HD Ready flat screen. They show wonderful HD pictures (which you cannot see in HD) but tell you how wonderful they are (although they have not proved it). So why do people go out and buy a HD box without actually knowing how different it might be? Why is the current high quality picture on the current TV not good enough?

Best advertising slogan ever IMO was used to promote Stella Artois lager back in the day, it was simply "Reassuringly expensive". In other words, "you want the best, you've got to pay for it", at least that was my interpretation. Problem is the've now fecked about with the brewing process to get the alcohol content below 5% vol to avoid having extra tax applied to the price. It used to be 5.2% vol and was the best tasting lager beer IMO now it's no different from the others.
I always thought the challenge of advertising HD through an SD image was an interesting advertising dilemma, when SkyHD first launched they were using decorative patterns and swirls, now HD is so ubiquitous people know what it looks like and they arte just weighing the decision against cost and content, the adverts now are generally just used to show the level of content, which to be fair is extensive, instead of the picture.
It amazes me how Sky get away with charging extra for HD when it doesn't cost them a single penny extra to transmit the signal ! Yes I would love to have Sky Sports but to be honest I'm more than happy with Freeview HD (which co-incidently is a better picture IMO) and my Humax Freesat HD recorder. I know we complain about MOTD but at least watching the highlights you don't have to sit through all the dross. Unless you're watching Norwich v A N Other that is !
My ex father-in-law invested in a HD TV and Sky box and to be honest I could not see a significant difference and certainly not enough to justify splashing out 400 quid on a new TV and more for the HD box to go with it. How many people out there (of a certain age or over) have reduced eye-sight? Quite number I would guess and all the more reason why I always found it quite amusing that people went for it without actually seeing it first hand.
There is no doubt that HD is a far better picture but Satellite HD transmissions are interlaced pictures so while they are superior to normal TV they are nowhere near as good as Freeview HD which is transmitted 1080P. At the end of the day though it really is all about the quality of panel and connecting cables that you have. My Sony TV was the price of a second hand car and I could have bought a weeks groceries with the money that I spent on just one HDMI lead. ..........................................gets anorak
