http://www.independent.co.uk/sport/...ins-prepares-saints-for-the-best-8007891.html A good read, but spot the error. DTLW
Nice to read, but wish Adkins would stop mentioning leaving. We all know he's not going to live to 101 and die in harness, but we'd rather not think about it now. Adkins, sometimes there are times to stay schtum.
"As a manager you sometimes think of winning the next game and needing money for a player, and you forget about the heart and soul of the club. If we get the structure right then there'll be a production line for many years to come of players playing the Southampton way, which will be financially right for this club. Whether I am still the manager at that time is another question, but you've got to think above that." I think it's clear he's talking long term. Let's face it if he does brilliantly he's likely to get poached eventually, does badly he'll get sacked. Way of the world. Let's just hope it's not for some seasons yet!
He's not really talking about leaving, he's talking about laying a foundation for long-term success, and looking beyond the immediate future, which is difficult for managers to do as their fate can often rest on the next result.
Am a bit concerned about the fact we're supposed to do under 4 min miles...can us oldies still stay on the bus, please.
I have to agree, while the harsh reality is it's very likely he won't be here in 10 years time, and he certainly won't be here forever, it's the kind of stuff I don't want to think about, I'm enjoying the present too much
Yes, I agree too. We don't want to read about Adkins moving on. It's entirely possible he could stay for 20 years or so, continuing to guide Saints, provided he matches Nicola's ambitions.
He does like to talk, last time he mentioned leaving he smootheed it over if I remember rightly, saying that it was a long day with lots of questions and high emotion. He's obviously a very realistic man, but I'm also a member of the club that would prefer him to keep the hard to swallow scenario of him possibly not being here in the future to himself!
He'll be here for years to come. Nicola's ambition provided Adkins continues to achieve will keep the latter interested I'm sure. The 'if I'm here' is just referring to what is always an uncertain future in football management - at the end of the day Cortese is more likely to give him the sack than Adkins leaving (unless Liverpool come in with an offer!).
This is one of the few situations where I'd rather discard logic like this in favour of acting irrationally, I can't help squirming when Adkins talks about his future!
Who cares what might happen in years to come? No-one knows the future, so it's pointless speculating who'll be our manager, our chairman, or even what league we'll be in in 10 years time. Best to just enjoy the ride.
If Football Manager is anything to go by, and it definitely is, then Adkins will leave us in 2016 for the England job, and will be replaced by Michael Laudrup. Sounds alright to me.
