Given the news of his retirement how do people now see Adam Lallana? He was a huge player for us in the double promotion years - and scored in the JPT Final, a result which made us feel good again. Plenty leave in search of medals and at least he won some. Are you listening Danny Ings? Two strong memories. A wet Tuesday night in Hartlepool when he scored a world-class goal. In the pub later even their fans were purring. Then a goal he didn’t score at Goodison. Back to goal on edge of area with two defenders all over him ball played in to his feet and with a double juggle completely bamboozled the two defenders and hit the foot of the post. His speed of thought and clever feet made a few of us gasp. Yes he was a dickhead about moving. But he remains one of the most technically gifted players I’ve seen in a Saints shirt. I do hope SRL is right and Adam can bring the spirit back to Saints. Thoughts?
Brilliant player. Absolute prick. Will never be in the legends category with the likes of Lambert, Fonte, SKD etc.
Legend. Only got one thing wrong and it was only words. I got over it quickly given his legacy His return has proved he loves Saints and doesn’t hold a grudge v the fans that maybe still do
I never cared about the circumstances behind his departure. He remains in my top three favourite Saints players ever. And I'm pleased that he's staying on as coach.
Forgave him pretty quickly after he left. Of course he had to go to Liverpool. Happy that he won silverware; he fully deserved it. Was an incredible player for us, and brilliant to watch. Fans bang on about loyalty but are quick as f*ck to turn on any player whose performances fall below par (Dibling, Smallbone…). Really glad he still wants to help the club. I reckon Fonte is more of a prick but he already seems to be forgiven.
I think he is a Legend. I know when he left he did not do it the right way. In a recent Ricky Lambert interview he basically said Ad's regretted the way he had handled it when he left. He has won medals which will help the youngsters know they can achieve their dreams. If he can also help bring back the Southampton way spirit then that is a big tick in my book.
Ricky Lambert's Epitaph: "Here lies SRL, born in Liverpool, made in Southampton." Adam Lallana's Epitaph: "Here lies Twat Beard, born in Bournemouth, made in Southampton, ****ed off 3 weeks after kissing the badge" Hold grudges? Me?
Loved watching him, elegant player. He ****ed it by being a nob. Perhaps he saw the headlines, but very ill advised either way. I was really disappointed. However, happy for him to put blood sweat and tears into the club. Who am I to say that the club isn’t special to him. Maybe this is how he gives back.
Like most people I was pretty pissed off with him when he left but that’s water under the bridge now and I wish him well in his coaching career. For me, a future Saints manager. Brilliant football brain.
Surprised by that re Fonte. I don't recall him doing anything too badly? He wanted the move after winning the Euros cos United was reportedly interested and I always felt that fair enough. I always felt it was petty that he didn't get any EL game time personally. He certainly didn't state he wanted to be known as Mr Southampton and would snap your hand off to stay for his career.
Re Lallana and I'm not arsed about him either way tbh. I'm not angry or bitter about him leaving but I don't consider him a legend either and he's not in my top 5 favourite Saints players.
If he'd gone to Utd then yeah, fair enough. But he didn't. He went to West Ham, which was a backwards move back then. We were regularly finishing above them. Maybe I remember it wrong, but I just seem to recall that he downed tools pretty hard that season after his head was turned.
I heard he moved on because he wanted a 3 year contract and we only offered 12 months……then went to West Ham, also heard Man U interest was only paper talk …….could be wrong though.
It was a 12 month extension, and he still had two years left. So in effect it was a three year contract. Was also a 'significant' pay rise but he mentioned in one interview that it still wouldn't put him in the top three earners. So maybe this was a sore point for him. He went from around 60k a week to 80k a week when he joined West Ham. Hardly a big pay increase.
I don't think it's a stretch to say that without Adam there would've been no back to back promotions imo and SRL wouldn't have scored nearly as many as he did (even he'd admit it). They were the greatest double act since Laurel and Hardy and were almost telepathic on the pitch. Who knows where we would be as a club and if we would've qualified for Europe and had those golden seasons in the PL. Of course there was no easy way for him to leave the club as he was the academy poster boy, the captain and he'd expressed his love for the club but he handled it badly at the time. I only really care about what a person has given to the club and he was incredible for us for 5 or 6 years and gave me some of my fondest memories watching the club ever. Club legend for me
