Now will PT wake up and realise he should not be in the back line up let alone captain. I've said it time and time again this season. Poor ole Davies made one mistake this season and got absolutely slaughtered for it, whereas with Captain Calamity's (thanks grumpygit) leadership we have leaked a grand total of 67 league goals this season. That third goal for Rotherham today was just an embarrassment to watch but we know how this works by now, as with Martin Allen and now with Peter Taylor, Captain Calamity will be a nailed on start for the Posh game. Time to ship him out he has become a liability. We were 3-2 up and the Captain single handedly lost us the game and against an Evans team as well makes it even more infuriating.
This is the first time in an age Gills have started a match with NO defenders on the bench. Legge is said to be injured, Davies out on loan. All getting a bit worrying for the last few crucial games.
I suppose the question is then, why is Davies out on loan, when we have a defender that makes not one but two mistakes to turn a 3-2 win into a 3-4 defeat. I hope Barrett gets slaughtered, dropped and loaned out in the same manner that Davies did. PT i'll be watching...and if you ain't got the balls to do it, then you can clear off in the summer as well.
To be honest I think today sealed Barrett's future at the club, if he'd gone somewhat under the radar till the end of the season then maybe he may have got just one more year but now its clear he has to go and I'm not making this decision based purely on todays game. Adam is now 34 which is quite old for a pro in the modern game and when you get older, the hard work of playing a professional football game is more likely to get to you which can lead to a loss of concentration which cost us today, in his prime he may have soldered on till full time but now in the second half with Barrett I get the impression he lapses on into a 'that will do' style of play, today for example when he messes up for there equaliser he may of just been thinking 'lets just get though and clear this....oh bugger' rather than really concentrating. In the summer I would love us to have a proper cohesive squad put together rather than the mix and match frankenstein of a squad we have now made up of players that aren't quite good enough for league 1 that Martin Allen up together last year. In all honesty after that today from Barrett and co I'm looking forward to the final whistle against Shrewsbury and a complete rebuild.
I have never been a person who likes picking on individuals but it has gone on too long now, today Captain Calamity failed to win his headers apart from the odd couple which he fed to the opposition, his ball control was abject, his long punts never found a blue shirt, he offered nothing going forward, please PT if you want a contract in the summer do what your paid for and "MANAGE"
Exactly grumpygit you sum it up again for me...PT needs to manage. I feel bad having a go at Barrett but i say as i see, I don't want to be right about my opinion, I want to be proved wrong, as i was with Joe Martin a couple of seasons back and I will rightly put my hands up and say fair play. But today that was appalling defensive behaviour and not for the first time. His rugby style challenge of game gone by was funny, today was just a plain joke and i wasn't laughing. Sorry Adam time to move on and if PT can't see it and constantly wants to tinker with everything other than the Captain then PT please leave as well.
Your not going to believe this brb but I totally agree with you. 3rd goal was a shambles as was the first goal. We aren't out of trouble yet by any means.
Cheers Lenny. Clearly when two people of normally completely opposite opinions come together and agree on something, then it certainly adds some foundation to the observations made. It's nothing personal against Adam and i still remember his fantastic goal line clearance he made during his time with us, the one where it looked a certain goal and an amazing overhead kick from him saved the day. I will always remember him for that moment. He done a good service for the club and brought us a league two trophy but we are all get older including me, you eventually have to face the reality of the situation. If PT plays him against Posh I will be disappointed but it will probably depend on who is fit and available as I read that Legge will still be unavailable.
The only option we seem to have is McKain as Davies currently cannot be recalled from his loan to Dover... So it probably will be the same back 4...
I think McKain is out on loan at Bromley. I think he should be giving Hare a chance as he looks a decent player and I think he has a good future at the club so about time we give him a go and see what he is like.
Borrowdale is 'nearly ready' at last! Apparently he can play CB as well as LB. But is it the right time to test a guy who is yet to step on the pitch for us? PT will know the answer to that. What a mess we are in at the back........
Adam Barrett is someone who has thrown his body on the line to block shots and make goal saving challenges, he is very good when it comes to defending crosses and his experience and leadership have proven to be invaluable in the dressing room. But clearly the step up in class is too much for Adam Barrett to deal with as he is up against better quality strikers and teams who have midfielders who can thread the ball between the full back and centre back, Adam Barrett's lack of pace has meant he has been left exposed when he has to mark strikers with pace, but he isn't the only one to find the step up into League One difficult this season as I personally think that the likes of Joe Martin, Chris Whelpdale, Charlie Lee, Myles Weston, Amine Linganzi and Antonio German have also struggled with life in the third tier. Myles Weston played exceptionally well on Saturday, but we have not seen enough of those performances this season, and I think the squad will need a overhaul and any money we have got to spend on wages over the summer will need to be spent on improving our defence and midfield because these are the area's of the team that need strengthening the most. I am sure when we have been promoted before we have broken up squad's that got us up in-able to ensure that Gillingham compete at the next level and that is what we will need to do in the summer, Adam Barrett hasn't been unprofessional and he hasn't cause unrest in the dressing room, he has just found the step up to League One difficult and he won't be the first or last player to find it difficult to step up a division. If Adam Barrett was a few years younger we would have the perfect centre back playing for us, Peter Taylor needs to find a Adam Barrett Defender in his prime who is 28 / 29 with a few hundred games of Football League Experience under his belt who has enough running in his legs to play in League One. (although players of that quality will cost you a transfer fee and a decent wage, hopefully we can find someone like that who is out of contract in the summer).
I warned you all when we signed him that he would struggle if we got promoted and I got shot down in flames. So LOL at all of you who didn't listen.
All tongue in cheek I know but I do remember a few people expressing concerns but in fairness he did us good service last season. I remember when writing Youth & Experience, I actually toned it down greatly from my original draft. One of the problems I tend to find with the modern game is when you are looking at winning a tinpot, its difficult to get people to see the wood through the trees. So to save me getting lynched I wrote a more moderate version. Even i never realised 15 months on, how close all of this was to the truth... http://www.not606.com/showthread.php/191219-Youth-v-Experience Especially this paragraph; 'What then once MA has left us in a good league standing and he moves to possible pastures new, where will our assets be with an ever aging team or will we once again be relying on how deep are the ever reliable club chairman pockets.' Not a bad insight considering it was wrote before we were even L2 Champions.
I've been saying this all season, just ridiculous how he has played so many games. The defence has never been improved when it should have, Barrett was fine for getting us out of league 2, but a pacey younger defender is what we needed in this league, and where might we find one of those in an affordable price range?? Well Dover seem to have done it.
I've only just watched the highlights against Rotherham (couldn't face them before) and that 3rd goal (Barrett air shot) is even worse than I remember from watching it live, absolutely under no pressure and he tries to do a fancy outside of the left foot kick, somebody tell him it's ok to use his right foot.
I was in more disbelief with that then the first goal Grumpy! We equalise and all we need to do is stay tight for a couple of minutes until we settle, but no, air shot Barrett to fat Evans rescue!
how do you think I feel after the Posh game LOL...I predicted we would lose 3-0...we were 2-0 down and the Posh get a penalty and Nelson saves it !
