My good lady had it on earlier while I was working, as I walked in they were talking about a young girl as part of the 'make a wish' foundation, which is a charity in america which makes dreams come true for children. This girl had brain cancer, I don't remember what her wish was but one of the photographs of her in her hospital bed had her wearing our 2004-05 away kit (the black one, might have been the season after). Tiger's fan or not, I hope she got her wish, it was filmed in 2007 so I hope she pulled through. Anybody know any more info on it?
Most Make a Wish children die as Make a Wish is for children who have life threatening medical problems. Sometimes a child gets into the program and ends up surviving and they still get their wish. Probably the most famous one of recent memory is Batkid. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Batkid The girl from the 2007 show is alive and cancer free as of 2009 when she posted this and said she was down to yearly MRI scans. It says she lives in Houston, doesnt someone on here live in Houston? Perhaps its his daughter. http://charmcitycakes.com/news/2009/02/16/hawaii-lauras-update-and-harras Although it is an American thing there is a Make a Wish international if you are interested in donating or helping them out. https://www.worldwish.org/en
Children with cancer. That's not something I'd have had any awareness of growing up. Cancer was such a taboo. So you'd only have known children could get cancer if you worked in health or had family experience. I remember when one of Gary Lineker's children had cancer. Maybe that was the period when the taboo got busted.
Make A Wish isn't just an American thing, it's been going here for decades, you'll often see messages on bottles of Fairy washing up liquid, they give a small percentage of their sales to fund it: https://www.make-a-wish.org.uk/
Indeed that's our youngest daughter who I am happy to say turns 21 in April this year having been diagnosed with a brain tumor in primary school. The photo on the update was from the 2008 Cup final. She's in college now and overall doing well though she had to give up playing football. Great organization and it is amazing how much the kids get out of it. Laura could have pretty much wished for anything but she chose to make a gigantic jungle birthday cake with Duff Goldman from Ace of Cakes.
Absolutely smashing news that fella. I've had a ****e day today and that's perked me right up. There should be a good news programme. A proper one not a comedy one.
Brilliant to hear mate, I wish you and your family all the best. Had you seen that episode of the show before? The cake looked amazing anyway and it was great to see her wearing her City shirt!
Great to hear that she is still doing good, I cant imagine how hard that must have been on you and your family.
Thank you Sterling and to all others for your genuine concern and well wishes. That is truly humbling. Re: the episode we were with Laura in Baltimore when the episode was filmed and were given DVD copies before it was first aired in the US. Make-A-Wish stopped at nothing to make it a great memorable weekend. It's weird how you remember the odd things but M-A-W provided a stretch limo to take her from the Inner Harbour to Charm City Cakes in a sketchy part of the city. All I remember is her stood up with her head out of the sunroof waving to anyone and everyone as we drove miles through streets straight out of The Wire. I think she enjoyed that part as much as making the cake!
