Accrington Stanley game abandoned because an 18 year old player called Tom Bender looks like he's broken his neck :(

    EDIT - http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/15176078.stm

A serious injury to Tom Bender forced the abandonment of the Accrington Stanley and Tranmere Rovers cup tie in the Johnstone Paints Trophy.

The Accrington defender was treated on the pitch for 25 minutes before being taking from the ground in an ambulance.

He went down in the 38th minute after colliding with Accrington goalkeeper Ian Dunbavin and Tranmere's Lucas Akin.

The Welsh youth international is on a season-long loan deal from Colchester.

Accrington chief executive Rob Heys told BBC Sport: "It was a three-way collision between Tom, Ian Dunbavin and the Tranmere player.

"It's difficult at this time to say what the injury is but our club doctor and physio ran immediatly to his assistance.

"Both sets of players were shaken up by the incident hence why we took the decision to call the game off - it's only natural reaction when you see a player stay down for so long.

"He was starting to show signs of coming around as he left the ground."

Accrington's Johnstone's Paint Trophy game with Tranmere was abandoned after 39 minutes due to a serious injury to Tom Bender.

The 18-year-old - who is on loan with the League Two side from Colchester - was treated for 25 minutes on the field at the Crown Ground before being taken to hospital after being knocked unconscious.

Both teams had left the field while Bender was treated by club medical staff and paramedics and once he had been stretchered from the pitch the decision was taken to abandon the game.

Accrington Stanley chief executive Rob Heys told Sky Sports News that the Welsh youngster had begun to come round before leaving for further expert medical care.

    Ambulance

Heys told Sky Sports News: "He is just about to leave in the ambulance now and be taken to the local hospital. Hopefully we will have some good news on him soon.

"He wasn't initially (conscious), but he started to come round as time went by, so that is a good sign.

"We are not sure on his exact condition, but he is in good hands. He was on the ground for a long time and was looked after by our staff and then the paramedics when they arrived.

"It was just a collision. One of the Tranmere attackers and our goalkeeper together with Tom, they kind of collided together.

"You are always a little bit concerned when a player lies still rather than moving around. The two physios were straight on the field and joined by our club doctor."

    Bender in stable condition

Tom Bender is in a stable condition in hospital after being injured in this evening's game with Tranmere.

The 18-year-old was stretchered off following a collision in the first half of the match and treated on the pitch before an ambulance arrived.

The match was subsequently abandoned and the thoughts of everyone at the club are with Tom and his family.

Further updates will be published here when we get them.

    Tom Bender Update

Accrington Stanley defender Tom Bender is being kept in hospital overnight for observation after he was stretchered off in tonight's game with Tranmere.

Stanley Chief Executive Rob Heys has been to visit the 18-year-old.

"Tom is now fully conscious," he said. "He has been for a scan which has come back as normal."

"He is severely concussed and is being kept in overnight for medical staff to keep an eye on him, but he's stable and that's great news."

The Johnstone's Paint Trophy match was abandoned earlier this evening after the youngster was hurt.

Further details on his condition will be posted here on the official website.

When i first read the title of this thread..??
Seem's that IF those scans came back normal? The lad should make a good recovery.. GOOD LUCK TO HIM. I hope he makes a full recovery.

I for one feel really stupid as I was complaining because we lost on Saturday.. <doh> Certainly makes you think when accidents like this happen.
