Curbs bought Marcus for £2.5m from Everton when we were in Prem. I think we were paying between £20k and £25k per week then.
i think he took a pay cut when we went down to 9 grand a week him and fattywank in the same team no wonder we went down!
i bet you didnt know rumours when we signed bent the everton chairman said that was the best bit of business he ever did selling bent to us for 2.5m
I did know that my mate is a Toffee. I think they bought him for £750,00 and the supporters always thought he was crap.
I only have 2 memories of Marcus Bent; 1 - the début goal against Chelsea (the good memory) 2 - the amount of money we wasted waiting for his hamstrings to improve enough for him to be in contention for a place in the team. Up there with some of our worst signings in my opinion!
My toffee supporting mate loved Bent- believe he played the lone striker in a 4-5-1 when they finished 4th.. claiming a Champions League spot over Liverpool. Remember him scoring a cracker for Leicester against us too! Just didn't go to plan when he joined us and seemed to lose interest in football. It's a shame, as before he joined us I thought he was a good player.
I can remember arguing a bit with A2C, when he was on one of his 'canonize St Curbs' threads. Curbs was for me a fantastic manager, but every now and then, he did things that were sadly not perfect. Buying Marcus Bent was an error, but spending 2.5 million? Ouch. I suppose it was good preperation for us for the Dowie saga.
