'Absolutely outstanding' - Bristol City's Lee Johnson points to Taylor Moore after Tomas Kalas injury blow
Head coach wants young players to step up as Czech international joins a crowded treatment room

Bristol City made it three wins from three Championship games as they further boosted their excellent record on the road in 2019.

A 3-1 victory over Hull City sees the Robins climb the nascent English second tier table off the back of triumphs over QPR and Derby County in the space of just seven days.

Following the game, head coach Lee Johnson reflected on the only bad news from the match at the KCOM Stadium: the first half injury sustained by key centre-back Tomas Kalas, as the Czech Republic man was stretchered off.

A hamstring tear looks likely but it is too early to tell how long the former Chelsea defender will be on the sidelines with Johnson already without key first-team players Jay Dasilva, Adam Nagy and Bailey Wright plus Korey Smith from last season.

"It looked obviously like a hamstring injury. Sniper to the hamstring," said Johnson.

"Feels like the team bus has run over a black cat at the moment. The amount of key players we’ve lost due to injury - and nobody likes a muscle tear if that’s what it is. But it is frustrating.

"But step up young lads. Taylor Moore was absolutely outstanding today. My man of the match.

"Just because such a young player has probably gone from fourth choice centre-half to putting in captain-style performances," said the head coach."

City also have veteran Ashley Williams to call on with the 35-year-old not registered in time to take on Hull and also not quite match fit after missing pre-season following his release from Everton.

With the growing injury crisis, however, and Middlesbrough at home on Saturday, Williams may be rushed into a debut ahead of schedule.

Johnson was asked if Kalas' departure actually helped matters in the game as the Robins then switched to four at the back - a shape that arguably enabled them to deal with Kamil Grosicki and Jarrod Bowen better.

The head coach admitted that changes were on the way regardless of the knock.

"Yeah, I was thinking about changing the shape anway. We couldn't quite get our distances right," added Johnson.

"We looked dangerous but obviously we didn't hold the ball up early enough.

"With their two wide men and they quality they have got, it can become difficult. But I thought the changes, for whatever the reason, went well.

"Mainly that's because the players have come on and had a good attitude and application."

Weakness in defence because we sold Webster, Kalas, DeSilva & Baily Wright are injured, who said? we have Taylor -Moore, Williams and Baker, they'll do us.

Middlesbrough and a 2 week break, welcomed recovery time, we'll survive.

Let's hope so. The medical team certainly have their hands full at the moment.

It’s a funny old game, our defence for the next few weeks at least is going to depend on two players that wouldn’t have been first team choices for most of us before the campaign started, Baker because of being bit of a sick note, and Taylor Moore not thought to be good enough.
Add to that we have a left back that was in League 1 last season, it makes last weeks results even more impressive.
