Arsene Wenger amazingly confirms plan to give Abou Diaby new Arsenal contract

Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger has confirmed plans to give injury-prone midfielder Abou Diaby a new contract at the club.

Diaby has been dogged by fitness problems in the last three years, which has severely limited his game time – and even brought suggestions that he might have to retire.

The Frenchman’s current contract expires at the end of this season and with Diaby only managing to play one game so far this term, he had looked set to leave.

But Wenger says he will hand the 28-year-old a new deal if he can shake off his current problem.

‘If he is fully fit he will get a new contract,’ confirmed Wenger.

So should we stick or twist? He's a talent but hasn't factored for us in many years. Have we risked enough years waiting for him to make a return? One things for sure, he is taking up a potential position that we can fill with someone else. I like him very much and really want him back, but sometimes you have to call it a day.

WTF! why would we pay someone £70,000 per wek (+ - ) to lay in the medical room for the next 3 years! Seriously, nice guy aside n all that, but he's dead wood taking up a valuable squad position.

Give him a gold watch, a handshake, stripper party for his leaving "do" and then bye bye!

Tbh I thought he'd be let go at the end of his contract. Reading the quotes it seems it will depend whether he recovers from his current injury problem and will only be offered a new contract if he isn't injured. I'd also imagine insurance covers a certain amount of his wages or that we will offer a pay as you play deal.

    Still it's a bit of a surprise!

Well Wenger is saying he might go. He is saying IF the guy is fully fit at the end of his contract he MIGHT get a new one.

Why on earth would any business employ a worker who is not able to work?

If they offer him a pay if you play contract then we would only need to pay him once every 3 years at this rate

Don't we have a maximum amount of players for squad registration...??? which to me is the biggest issue here. Leaving out someone at the expense of a crooked pay as you play Diaby.

This is what I take issue with. We don't have the luxury of carrying players. We are in a situation of all hands on deck. Players like Flamini haven't cut the standard this season but due to Arteta being injured himself has forced us to play him.

The thing is Wenger knows Diaby is the kind of player our team needs.

    Physical, athletic, aggressive.

I think he is the reason we hav'nt gone out and bought a big physical midfielder in recent years.

It's just like the RVP scenario we had a few years back, Wenger wouldn't buy what we needed because technically we already had the right quality of striker. (He was just constantly injured)

It shows loyalty but it also shows pig-headedness.

I think the exact same thing. It's good to show loyalty but this was plain silly. This is just another example of making mistakes and paying the price for it. Had he gone out and replaced Diaby and RVP with similar players, then we would have been much more better off. Till this day, we don't have a balanced midfield, due to the "potentially great" Diaby. Even if he leaves, the spectre of Diaby will constantly be a reminder of Wenger's failure of bringing in the right players at the right time.
