Anyone watch that documentary last night? Heart rendering, 141 people murdered by the NCB ****s. 50 years ago this month.
I was six years old when this happened, and it really struck a cord that that nothing before it ever had..The fact that it was kids my age who had got buried really got to me at the time..
Raw I was 10 when this happened and exactly like you it was the first "event" that registered with me. The four tops had a song out that year called "reach out i'll be there" and even now every time I hear it I get a mental vision of a child's hand reaching out from a sea of mud and slurry. I hate that song.
Many disasters are brought into our homes through TV but this one was 'our' disaster and had a great effect on the population at the time, I was 17 then. I think it resonated more in our area because if the link with the coal industry, as Billy intimated a disaster that could and should have been averted. So much heartache for the past 50 years for those involved.
Billy what channel was that on as I missed it? Hopefully I can watch it on one of these catch-up channels.
The NCB were warned several time that it was a disaster waiting to happen. There were three heaps & apparently, the year before one had started to slide but stopped halfway down. Just before the disaster in 1966 it had rained insessently for a few days which was what caused it to slide. A sea of unstoppable slurry, a bit like an avalanche in the mountains. The school took the brunt of it but it also took out many peoples houses. Not a single NCB boss even volunteer to resign let alone be sacked. And do you know what else? They offered the families of the victims £50 each compensation. ****ing bastards.
Was told by a Deputy at Seaham Colliery many, many years ago that NCB stood for "Nee C***s Bothered" - how true.
I watched it and was amazed to learn that there had been land slides previous ,the fact that no one was held accountable is an absolute disgrace !
Just finishing watching it, those poor, poor people. And all the NCB would give them was £500 per person. . . arseholes!!!!!
I’m sure it was £500, it then later rose to £5,000 - The NCB paid out £160,000 in compensation: £500 for each child, plus money for traumatised survivors and for damaged property.
How very ****ing generous of them eh? £160,000 for over 140 plus dead. PTSD & all that damaged property. Total ****s.
Anyway thanks Billy for telling me about this, excellent documentary considering the subject. Also the music was created by James Dean Bradfield from the Manic Street Preachers.
and yet if it had of been an overseas disaster, all the do good knobheads would of been screaming out to the government to send any amount of aid. the government would of paid up, patting themselves on the back all the way to re election
They were all young women at the time mate who had to contend with their children being buried alive. I couldn't cope with that. It would finish me off. I'm not that mentally strong.
