Newcastle United chiefs are thought to be holding talks over Rolando Aarons’ future.

The flying winger signed his first professional contract only in April but his stock has risen significantly since then and the 19-year-old was linked with Manchester City and Liverpool over the weekend – with both believed to have ran the rule over the teenager.

Aarons has been a success story for the club’s youth system after he joined as a 15-year-old from Bristol City. He was developed in the Academy under Dave Watson and then the reserves under club legend Peter Beardsley.

It is understood that Aarons has one year left of his current contract with the year of an option to follow. Newcastle will be eager to get Aarons tied down to a long-term deal ahead of the January transfer window.

Owner Mike Ashley has a long-term vision of the club producing their own talent but also ensuring that if players must be sold they are protected by a lengthy contract.

That was the case when Academy product Andy Carroll was sold on to Liverpool in 2011 for £35million in a record-breaking deal – and since then Alan Pardew has claimed that the club remain “hard sellers” in the transfer market.

The club’s development pool manager Beardsley said earlier this year that the plan was to nurture young talent and focus on bringing fresh faces through the ranks.

Beardsley said: “The owner is all for youngsters doing well and what he’s doing at this football club at youth level is incredible, I genuinely mean that. Long term, it will be brilliant.”

Aarons is currently injured with a hamstring problem and is doubtful for the clash with Queens Park Rangers on Saturday after missing out on England duty with the Under-20s.

Harry Redknapp will bring his QPR side to St James’ Park on the back of a positive 2-2 draw with Manchester City before the international break.

He admits after a bad start to the season he has enjoyed the current break better than the last one. Redknapp said: “That’s how this game is. You get a win, it’s the best feeling in the world. When you don’t play well it’s a very lonely job. I’d miss it if I wasn’t doing it that’s for sure.”

The only way we can get to the next level without a sugar daddy is to produce young talent and lots of it. We may have to lose a few like Aarons along the way but if we do the right things, sooner or later 4 or 5 will come through together.

But in order for the club to benefit we need to either commit to keep them to be part of long-term strengthening exercise or ensure that any money raised from sales is invested in the playing staff. I don't see that happening right now. I think MA will treat them as a windfall profit.

As Southampton have done so successfully in recent years.
Lose good young players and arguably replace with better.
The difference with Southampton and us unfortunately is the level of re-investment.

Hopefully they sort out a decent, long-term contract with a high 'release clause' and a good sell-on fee included.

As said above, we will lose this kind of player, but if we can get 2-3 good years first, then a tidy profit then that's fine so long as we have developed the next line of talent to replace him and maybe even be an improvement.

It was always part of MA's plans - it just takes a while to really see the benefit of youth development. Hopefully if he now sees it is providing him with value, then he'll recycle some of that into further investment into developing more. As Pouchy says, that's probably all just a dream though! <laugh>
