Just 4 league starts last season. i like the player and think he could grow into premiership quality. Out of those 4 starts just 1 was under Adkins, a 3-0 win against Yeovil. He was also part of our 0-4 win at Bristol earlier in the season and started the 2-0 win over Blackpool in the cup. Why so few games? Does Adkins not rate hime? Is it because Fonte Jaidi and Seabourne are all that much better? Is he being 'saved' and brought on gradually? Does he not really have a long-term career at Saints. What are your thoughts on him, like/dislike - does he have a future at Saints especially if we buy another centre back this summer?
Hi RedandWhiteManofKent, I finally signed up... I saw Martin and Seabourne play against Blackpool and they looked assured, however Seabournes talent a shirt pulling always worries me. I think that we prob have only room for one of these two if we add another centre back, nevertheless I do not think Jaidi will play too much this year.
Hi OddRiverOakWizards and welcome. Look forward to reading your excellent threads. Personally i think that Martin has far greater potential than Seabourne and would like to see a bit more of him playing
When you have Jaidi and Fonte in front of you, you aren't gonna play many games unfortunately. Adkins said in one of his interviews this season that he rates him, clearly further demonstrated by giving him a new deal. He just has to be patient for his chance.
We pulled the deal for Elliot Ward at the last minute (I think Cortese didn't like his wage demands) and the Seaborne signing was rathe rushed. He's not that bad though. I think Adkins likes to have a right sided and a left sided centre half in a partnership. Fonte and Martin are more comfortable on the right, Seaborne on the left and Jaidi is experienced enough to do both (and pretty shocking with both feet!). I think Martin is the natural understudy to Fonte and Fonte hasn't had a significant layoff yet. Martin could prove though that he can make a partnership with Fonte if he has a good pre-season. He has composure and ability on his side.
Depends if he has time on his side, because he's what...21/22? It's an important season for him definitely.
I am sure i read some-where that Fonte prefered to play alongside Martin. Seabourne really did my head in against Posh.
Hi Beddytare, it is good to see so many familiar names on here and to observe that the mods for both Saints and Portsmouth boards are ones of good standing.
I don't think Seaborne is as bad as what people make out. Although, he does seem to have confidence issues, which could hinder his chances of being a first team regular. I like Martin but I'd like us to sign a real quality centre back this summer.
Cheers Buddy We all work together. In the main we have a good crowd although there is the contingent of "Skate and Scummer haters" although mostly been fairly good natured and we tolerate each other. Bit quiet at the moment until the in and outs are known. As I said before nice to see another old face........
I often feel the left of the two centre backs have a harder job covering for Harding whose positioning is not always great, for example against Peterborough when Seabourne was left exposed and having to come across to cover leaving a space in the middle. Seabourne is good in the air, like Jaidi, whereas Martin is a bit quicker.
He's too slow, not agile enough and not technically good enough. My colleague is a salisbury fan and said he thought he was conference standard.
I think Harding gets blamed for a lot, but if I remember the goals CMS scored in that 4-4 game, the first he beat Seaborne who was running in treacle coming down the Boro left so between our RB and Seaborne and the second was straight down the middle when Seaborne misjudged it. Don't use Seaborne's inabilities to lay into Harding... Dan is a real marmite player and you obviously don't like him but to blame him for Seaborne's errors is taking it a little far...
