I’m sure this will turn into a us and them thread but I hope not, its meant as a serious look at two teams transfer policy, only next season will say who got it right.

Newcastle seem to be rebuilding by going for good quality but unproven EPL players. I have no doubt about their quality and in a short spell Ba showed he can score. IMO the key will be how many of their team they can keep but its a gamble.

Sunderland seem to have accepted that the foreign player may leave us short, maybe the Da Silva/Riveros/Angeleri finger buring hurt. So we seem to be looking at the not so exotic but tried and tested EPL player with a young English hope thrown in.

We still have a long way to go and its anyones guess what is still to come, I know the Newcastle fans will say they have it right and some of ours will say the same.

Me, I’m happy with what we are trying to do, would like a big name in but TBH have no idea who is right.

    Good article Syd.

Its hard to tell this early, if we got N'Zogbia I would feel a little bit more comfortable. If we hang on to Barton and Enrique, I will be delighted and our squad will look really good.

But of course we are better than you :) The table at this current moment in time doesn't lie.

Two key words there mate. We have once again over taken you, without even trying! That's how easy it is.

I think only time will tell which approach is right, the mags haven't really spent much money, so it may not be a huge risk and they may have found a player who has a blinder and becomes massive for them. I think our approach is much more cautious in bringing in players who know the Premiership and so you would expect to be able to hit the ground running.

That's true <ok> just can't wait for it all to start for real again. All this transfer nonsense just doesn't compare to a matchday.

To be honest I don't think either set of supporters are exactly overjoyed with their respective signings. Still early days though just hope the money doesn't run out too soon.

Cabaye is the one player we have signed that I am exited about, the lad is a quality player. Your rite when you say he is unproven but the kid has a definite class about him. I started watching Lille when we were in for gervinho as the french league is well covered in brazil and cabaye made them tick. Exactly the type of player we were looking for.
Sunderland are also going down that track though, with the Korean bloke and whickham. Both are un proven.

Think both teams pretty evenly matched 1st 11 but, if barton, enrique, colo & gutterpress leave these are massive losses, heart of the team gone etc and Newcastle may struggle.

    P.S. I hope so

Patrick Kluivert had class, Albert Luque, Michael Owen, Nicky Butt all had class. It means nothing.

For me Brucie looks to be trying to emulate his old gaffer SAF in that he is building a young squad hoping to find some success or at the very least establish us as a top half club.

SAF did the same, albeit with a much bigger club and budget to match but the basis is there if we can get all the youngsters to gel and perform, if we can then we have a squad that we can build on and fine tune over the next few seasons. Who know's where that will lead? it could all backfire if Brucie can't get them to perform but he could get it right.

As for Newcastle, I honestly don't think that in a few seasons time they will be able to compete with us and i'm not saying that out of malice or anything like that, I genuinely don't think that Ashley has the same ambition as what NQ or ES does. I like the way AP has conducted himself and the way he has the team playing but i think that Ashley will tighten the purse strings which will limit what AP can achieve.
