We all took the idea of Pardew's new 8 year contract in different ways. Most of us thought it was a good thing because Ashley was trying to achieve stability.

All it's done is given Pardew a nice insurance. I'm not suggesting he doesn't care about us anymore, but if we fail and he gets sacked, then he gets a few million.

As I said, I'm not saying Pardew doesn't care about Newcastle and how well we do anymore, but It might just take take the edge away from him. If he fails here, he can at least say that he got a club into Europe, and he gets a load of cash to ease a sacking.

He was better on his original contract.

I personally believe that Ashley wont mind if we finish lower-mid table from now on as long as we are making money. Part of me thinks that a relegation scare might be good for the club, because it will show the fat **** that we need squad depth and signings.

I realise we can't spend fortunes, but spending 10-20m a year and raking in 40-50m a year of TV money and other things would surely make the club far more attractive, than making 10m a year, not spending anything, and sitting in 12th place!

We should be challenging for Europe every season, but if we carry on like we're going, we'll be challenging for top 10, lose the likes of Cabaye, Tiote, Ben Arfa and Ba, and have to settle for mediocrity.

I know people will say we should be happy because of where we were a few years ago, but I don't like the idea that we should just be happy because were stable and earning money.

Sorry Tash, but I strongly disagree on lots of levels, not least financially.
YoYo clubs have no long term stability.

My main point is that the figures are there in black and white. We make more money than most clubs in this division, yet we don't spend money when we need to.

Ashley constantly gives the impression that he'd be happy us finishing in a mediocre position as long as the club is making a big profit.

We can make a better profit if we bring the right players, spend a bit of cash, and bring in far more profit by being in Europe, finishing in a higher position, and selling more tickets.

Yes, but this is what I'm saying. We seem to be focusing so much on our past and being grateful to be in the premier league at all due to our past woes.

We might still have some work to do, but we are making good progress financially, and we have to give Ashley credit for that. But looking at the figures, we make 50-60m a year, and it must be even more now that we're in Europe.

All I'm saying is that we can spend a portion of that cash on bringing in the right players to keep us up the table and making money!

Not just spending nothing and being happy with mediocrity.

What the club turns over is significantly different to what we come out with. Financially the Europa is only beneficial on a serious money note if you win it. Qualifying for CL will get ou more money than winning Europa.

It's not just the cash you get from being in Europe, it's also the fan base reacting to success. You sell more tickets due to extra games, you get more fans involved and you sell more season tickets and merchandise.

Considering the gates we have had and the price of tickets the money coming in through that avenue will be minimal. We would earn more finishing higher in the prem. the tv deal coming in next season is going to dwaf anything we have had previous. Once the club is making clear profit there is no reason that that money shouldn't be released for playing staff.

Newcastle are a funny club. One year they are challenging for a CL spot next they are battling relegation. Reminds me a bit of table tennis.

    tell me about it fella.
Everton did the same at the beginning under Moyes so hopefully we'll eventually start to stabilise.

I wouldn't want to see us do a Chelsea though. Too much cash splashing around removes the game from the common man.

I don't think a scare would be good for the club. The growing sense of optimism created through the last few years, championship winners, solid mid-table, 5th, is off the back of an upward curve. I'm more gutted right now than when we were relegated (having been ****e for years). 2 step forwards, 4 seasons back is what it looks like. Relegation, or even finishing 14th-17th would bring an abrupt end to this chapter, and that's a shame.

I'm not pleased Alan is on an 8 year contract, because I don't like his football 8 years worth, but he did deserve a new contract unquestionably. I think a few pasties exchanged hands there because 8 is just farcical. I don't believe it's impacted his or our performance though, we've played the exact same way as last year (whatever formation, we always play the same under Alan, last season we just edged games we've lost this year) and the players should probably like the fact the manager situation is so stable.
