Im gonna have to learn to copy & paste!!!!

Heres a perspective for you Syd....

...Its from Craig Gordons Point of view...Just think of how he`s feeling today...One of the things I woke up with this morningwas a game I attended when I was 12 years old...There was reckoned to be 68 000 people in Roker Park(The estimates range upwards) that night and if you talk to anybody that wentyoud know how frightening that was...The anniversary is next month We played Man Utd in the FA Cup. My Uncle had used my little wooden board wedged agaist the wall of the Fulwell end to let me move in the cavity towards the turnstile for the last 5 yards People could see what he was trying to do and helped "Ginnan Gerrin Youngun!"....Can you imagine trying to get in with a plank these days? I was frightened getting in But when I stumbled into the ground and looked back itwas even more frightening looking back down the streets to see the thousands locked out
Ironically because I had my little wooden shelf I could see the game not too badly strung across the wooden fence at the back of the Fulwell end....Anyway its well over 45 years ago....( I cant believe it!!)

Maybe I should throw this out as a quiz question...Can anybody remember the game and what was the link with Craig Gordon today?....

Monty misskicked a goalkick straight to Denis Law, standing on the edge of our box. He didn't miss those chances. That was the replay 2-2 after extra time. In the first game he was knocked out in the last 10 mins at old trafford when we were coasting with a 3-1 lead, Law helped him to his feat & promptly scored from the resulting corner. It wouldn't happen in these days. result 3-3. AS it happens Gordon has probably cost us more points this season as Monty did in his whole career. Bring back the Mig look at the stats.

Bruce has stated today in the echo that he is having a hard time. Answer take him out, he finds an opponent more in a game than the oppositions best playmaker.

Spot on Billpev youve remembered well!....Remembering I was twelve I hated it when blokes pulled Monty to bits...and they did even then .To me he was a hero. Especially as he was from Sunderland I remember wanting them just to shut up...Maybe we should all be twelve when we watch .The crowds were huge and wild in those days.....Can you imagine coming into training the day after? I dont care they get paid thousands....Youre either behind him properly ....or you want to destroy him....They say youve got to be slightly mad to be a keeper and next to boxing the loneliest position in the world...
Personally I`d be chanting the boys name next time we play....you never know CG could pull off a fantastic save and win us something....the blokes killing him were always saying what a great shot stopper he was while sticking the knife in....

Gordon cant be blamed for any of the goals against Spurs or stoke.

Our defence let Dawson get free, and gallas ran across gordon which unsighted him.

At stoke he was man handled all through the game, and when he wasnt been held on to or wrestled etc, he caught the crosses etc cleanly.

I Kna I Kna it was terrible.....about ten years after I played football for South Shields and trained with Nicky Sharkey.....I was still so in awe of him from his fantastic goal in the first match....I could barely bring myself to kick him....hahah!

Dont think Mig is the answer - he is shaky at crosses too from what I've seen. I'm suprised to learn we don't seem to practice defending dead ball situations!

Wish we still had Monty! Don't get me wrong, I like Gordon but Monty is my favourite all-time Sunderland player. Saved us many a time. I do remember he was poor with goal kicks tho - never straight!

From what Ive seen of Gordon I know hes tough mentally physically and ambitious Theres not an easier position on the field to support or destroy i`d put my money on him to come through....you never know....MR was saying the other day that selling Bent could be the best thing thats happened...Maybe the same thing could be true of the last few bloody noses for the defence....

    agreed
Where did you 'learn' this, do you know Big Chris?
Mine too, you have to go back to someone like Raich Carter for a bigger legend imo
That and the fact that he couldn't see much further past his own 12 yard box and he was prone to 35 yard daisy cutters

    MMM

Apologies if the comment re practice is wrong - thought I'd read it on here, or on BBC 606.

    Anyway, Monty for me please!

I thought Craig did well against Stoke. They basically assaulted him all game, our piss poor defence should have been protecting him. For Bruce to blame him was crass.

It got worse for Monty as in the second replay (at Huddersfield?), we lost 5-1 (Nickey Sharkey scoring first) yet Monty remains our greatest goalkeeper alongside Johnny Mapson. (Mapson was 19 when we won the Cup and was still playing for the Bank of England team in the 1950s!) Craig Gordon might just get up there with them but it means we have to win something. Let's hope he does it.

....Just hope he gets the support...sometimes I think some English players suffer ...Its OK to be passionate as long as the passion is transmitted to the player in a positive way....
