I'm just trying to get an idea if there is a strong consensus either way on having a betting thread on this board. I've set up a poll, but that is more to give an idea, and it is not going to be the final element of how the decision is made, irrespective of the poll result, and it is the board users, not the mods that decide these things, we're just the cleaners. Personally, I enjoy a flutter, but I have seen several times and at very close quarters that damage that can result when people get carried away. It should also be worth noting that there is an existing gambling section on NOT606 https://www.not606.com/#racing-gambling.174 So, any strong views either way?
i think it is a good idea as regular people who support hull can have a bit of banter and cheer each other on,when you mix with other clubs on a thread like this you will get those from other clubs starting crap for no reason and at least the people in our forum know each other. It's something we do and it won't change so why should we not have a dedicated thread people who don't like it don't have to read or use it do they. I will go along with whatever you decide but i do not see issues with it considering more peoples lives are ruined by drink and drugs then having a bet.
I'm biased - a grandparent lost all their money on the horses and ended up living on a caravan park. I've felt the strong pull of "just one more flutter" and to be honest it scared me, it was such an overwhelming feeling. I think I could be susceptible to problem gambling if I got into it so I avoid it and all discussion of it. That's just me - I have strong feelings and I'd prefer it wasn't here. However, if there was a way of me hiding the thread then I'd be happy with that compromise.
I have absolutely no interest in gambling so a dedicated thread would be ideal for me. I wouldn't go there.
Thanks for that. It's an interesting idea that you offer as a compromise. I just checked, and I can't see a way of posters hiding a thread. One option (I think) would be for you to block the thread starter, but then you'd miss all other posts that they made. We can block posters from a thread, but that wouldn't stop someone viewing it, so isn't a reasonable option. I'll give it some thought.
If there is an existing gambling area, I can’t really see the purpose of a second one on here. It won’t have any direct relevance to Hull City, will it? Which is primarily why we are here (well, that and chip spice and aquatic creatures).
DMD it might well upset some if it remains so just leave it i will just PM a few who want to chat in PM about bets that way no one gets upset.
if we are going on threads only dedicated to City, at least half of the current threads need removing. i agre with 1moreagain, i arent interested with interacting with a Bristol Rovers fan , we are a little group who even though we dont know each other personally we enjoy interacting about different things together. i havent touched the Ashes or F1 threads as i have no interest, people can just do the same to this one and leave us who like it to get on with it,
Thanks DMD - tbh if the consensus on here was to have the thread, and I couldn't hide it, I'd probably be fine and mentally filter it out like I do the other threads that don't interest me. I recognise that others enjoy it and its not a problem for them - I think I'm the gambling equivalent of a recovering alcoholic who can meet their mates in the pub and stick to soft drinks all night. But I think with the easy availability of online gambling, it makes it far easier for someone to fall down a rabbit hole without even having to get off the sofa. I hate the way that gambling companies operate and are accepted in sport, and personally I don't like seeing it encouraged. It's a free country though.
Could you set up a new username, start the thread with that user and then never use it again? Anyone not wanting to see gambling info can then ignore that user and not miss any of the normal DMD (or whoever’s done it) content they know and love?
I just tried putting a thread starting poster on ignore, and that worked, so I'll look at that as one option. The problem as I see it there is that my concern is about people who perhaps don't have a habit, but develop one due to that thread, as it's quite likely that people will post more about their wins than there losses, but I accept that they're going to be tempted somewhere if they are of that ilk, but your suggestion would help some others. Maybe I'm just overthinking it...
It's ok DMD don't worry i think there would only be a few who use it so maybe we can do it in PM and share what we do there. It's only going to cause issue's otherwise and i don't fancy the idea of maybe someone copying what i do either if they can't afford maybe i should have took that into consideration. Live and Learn as they say.
So far, I think those that are interested already use the gambling section, and it doesn't look like there's much emotive feeling either way, so maybe just see how it goes. If there's no interest, it's dribble down the board anyway.
i think you are with all due respect , if it makes you feel better ill post my results every weekend , will update which team's 98th minute equaliser ending their 27 game losing streak ****ed me over that week, enough to put anyone off
I think its a fair concern DMD and worthy of debate. On the one hand we're all adults and its a legal activity that many people enjoy without problems. On the other, we're also a community that look out for each other. The more I think about it, maybe a dedicated thread would be a good idea, and first post has a link to "stop before the fun stops" and other support resources, and folk on there just generally keep an eye on each other for problem behaviour, as per the mental health thread?
We can put our bets up that way people can see us lose and they will learn from it, so it's educational to. And i already put one on today so people can see it lost, don't follow me.
thats not a bad idea , i get the concern i just find it strange how this thread has suddenly caused it, im sure there has been threads on Gin and favourite beers before and nobody said anything about those , as DMD eluded too earlier there are adverts everywhere for it now , you cant escape it, i very much doubht a thread on here is going too tip people over the edge, and like you say there is a mental health thread if people want too talk about it.
for me, the difference with talking about booze is, if reading a thread gives you a sudden craving for booze when you've been avoiding it, you've probably got to go out of the house and get some. whereas for gambling, that barrier to action is a lot lower, you only need to move as far as your wallet and your credit card. Interestingly, gambling is reckoned to ping the same parts of the brain as booze - it's a recognised problem that ex-drinkers often develop new or bigger gambling problems once dry.
