Met the man when he was serving behind the counter of his in-laws off licence shop down Hawthorn Ave, he would chat about football if no other customers were in the shop and I was only a lad at the time. I always kicked myself many years later as being an avid autograph collector in those days it never occured to me to ask the great man to sign my book. Billy Bly had a sweet shop in those days near to Boothferry Park and I asked him for his signiture so why I never asked Raich I'll never know. And I see there is his autograph on the match programme :emoticon-0106-cryin

"He didn't play the game, he presided over it". Great quote from Alan Plater.

My dad saw us play Leeds when John Charles was playing for them, and said that was the time he saw the two players he had ever seen on the pitch at the same time.

Well, he is a Sunderland legend so will be of more interest to Phil Buckingham than most City players past or present.

Good read that. I've still got a few photos of me getting presented with medals from Raich when i was a kid.

Ye I have. He used to do lots of presentations for Boys Sunday League, used to have lots of 5 a side competitons in the summer and Raich used to present the medals. Seem to remember my Grandad and Dad telling him a few things he'd gotten wrong.
