If you were to be told that a team playing in the Ryman League Division One South were to be invited to play the 2012 World Club Champions in Brazil you may have thought that someone had taken leave of their senses, but that is just what is happening today in Sao Paulo. Corinthian Casuals were due to play a commemorative match last year to celebrate the centenary of their Brazilian tour that was stopped by the outbreak of the First World War in 1914 but the World Cup preparations debacle meant that the match had to be cancelled, it was rearranged for today and is currently 0-0 at half-time. Corinthians FC are one of the most famous teams in world football and they were founded by the Corinthian FC, one of our most famous amateur clubs over 100 years ago following a tour to spread the 'gospel' of football around the world. They have never forgotten their 'roots' and have kept links to the Casuals throughout the past century. Many of the players who arrived in Brazil in 1914 for the tour that was cancelled never survived the conflict, they had some star names in those days including Max Woosnam, perhaps the greatest all-round amateur sportsman of all time. The Casuals have an amazing following in Brazil and their facebook page has them in the Top 25 of all clubs for followers. There is a documentary being made about the trip which will be aired in the near future. On a day when giant-killings in the FA Cup are taking place the Casuals are playing in an atmosphere that leaves even those heady events way behind. This photo was taken prior to kick-off...
