So sad to read this, he was a true legend for Town and a great fella. Paul Mariner: Former Ipswich and England striker dies aged 68 https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/57788208
I was lucky to meet him at a dinner at Portman Road just before the pandemic and when he was still in relatively good health. What a character! I’m sure Town will lift major trophies again in future but the achievements of that side, how they went about it and what it means to us all will never be matched.
As one of many tributes to the guy this one from Mel Hendreson says a lot: "I have been asked by many younger people what Paul Mariner was like as a player. Trying to give my answer some context, I generally compare him to Alan Shearer. ..... Only better!”
So young too, very lucky to have seen him, many times, playing his socks off, leading the line, inspiring the team, perhaps our finest team under Sir Bobby, who else, winning the FA Cup & EUFA Cup. Let that sink in! The team that beat L'pool 2-0. Dare we hope to see another like him in our time?!
I was quite shocked to see this thread. He was almost exactly a year younger than me. Watched him a lot at Portman Rd in the days when I used to do Ipswich and Norwich on alternate Saturdays. A great player.
