there has for an awful long time been coms in the Himalaya area vhf etc setting up the sat / wifi / phone coms was just a progression of modern day technology.. Because all mobile frequencies are pretty much line of site the tops of mountains , ( fringe ones close to valleys and populations ) often have signals ...there are a number of places in the alps where there are villages with no signals but the walkers and shepherds get them from the higher pastures .. this is of course being rectified as more towers are put in in the uk towers are every few kilometres, my surprise was in 2010 when at 2350 metres checking the time on my phone I had a signal, nearest village was about 18km as the ravens flew and I was surrounded by peaks .. just 50-70m m of the path allowed the signal, higher up 2700+m no signal...
