A depressing picture has been posted onto social media on Saturday night from Portsmouth’s Fratton Park.

The picture reveals how some unknown Southampton fans have deplorably defaced a First World War memorial at Portsmouth’s home ground.

The Saints fans wrote “Southampton Boyz” in red marker pen on a plaque that was erected “in remembrance of those men who volunteered to serve in the Great War 1914 – 1918 with the 14th and 15th battalions Hampshire regiment many of whom enlisted at Fratton Park.”

Oh dear, oh dear, oh dear.........Very much doubt it was carried out by true Saints fans, but whoever did do it has certainly overstepped the mark.

Just go to the Southampton board and there is 100% disgust towards those who carried out this action!!!! Very idiotic action by whoever did this. Let us hope it does not deepen the animosity between the true supporters of both clubs who enjoy good banter on this site!!

Whereas it would appear to be the 'work' of someone whose leanings are towards the red side of Hampshire, the evidence is hardly conclusive enough for you to baldly state "The Saints fans wrote..." Or " unknown Southampton fans deplorably defaced....."

You may well be right but you might equally be wrong, I might equally be right in saying a 13 year old with no sense or affinity to SFC scribbled in the spaces between the memorials and may be from the Southampton area?

It's a disgusting thing to do, no doubt and the perpetrator should be punished.

And you might consider a career in sensationalistic journalism?

A lot of Pompey fans (probably most) think it's the work of a pimply acne faced teen without a brain............... and have respect for the outrage and disgust shown by Southampton fans - some of whom also served in the Hampshire Regiments.

If however, the perpetrator imagined it might lead to a worsening of hostilities.............. then he failed, big time.

Pompey fans seem to be leaving it to Saints fans to deal with the young scrote.

Scrote being the objective word.....Sad to be even remotely associated with such a cowardly and despicable act. My apology goes to the families of all that are mentioned on the memorial. As to whether it is a so called football fan of either club which to me I doubt. What on earth were they thinking.
I really doubt any true football fan of either club would for a moment consider something like this to show rivalry or oneupmanship or what ever.
If it turns out to be a saints or a Pomey fan then locking him/her up and throwing away the key would be too good for them. I am sure both sets of fans would agree.........

Too right Beds. I wonder if there is a strategically placed camera that might have caught them red handed.

Those men fought and died for our liberty and don't deserve this.

Unfortunately just one of many - I'm always reading about young idiots defacing war memorials. Maybe we should look again at how we treat the history of both world wars and the men and women who died for our freedoms - too many kids are growing up knowing very little about them.

Yes, have to say whoever did this, regardless of where they are from or who they support is clearly an uneducated gimp or simply lacking in any moral compass. It must be said it has nothing but full condemnation on the Saints board and I expected nothing less - for all our rivalry, they, like we, know when something crosses the boundaries of common decency.
