"We showed both sides of our game" says Bristol City FA Cup goal-ace Jay Emmanuel-Thomas.

Bristol City goal-hero Jay Emmanuel-Thomas believes the League One leaders showed two sides to their character to beat Gillingham 2-1 and book a place in the second round of the FA Cup.

In almost complete control in the first half, the Robins dominated the opening 45 minutes and deservedly led through Greg Cunningham’s close-range header.

Emmanuel-Thomas added a second with a sumptuous strike from 25 yards with 13 minutes remaining, but City came under increased pressure in the second half and had to defend for their lives at times.

Danny Kedwell threw the Gills a lifeline when hammering in a penalty nine minutes from time, but the Robins dug in to ensure safe passage into the next round and Monday’s draw.

“I think people saw both sides of us today,” admitted Emmanuel-Thomas, who was making only his third start of the season.

“It was a really good first-half performance and we should have scored more than the one goal. We were patient, moved the ball really well and wore Gillingham down.

“They tired and we created quite a few chances as they made mistakes. It was a great move for the first goal and Waggy (Scott Wagstaff) did well to get to the line and put in a great cross for Greg (Cunningham) to score.”

Gillingham boss Peter Taylor switched from a 3-5-2 system to a more orthodox 4-4-2 after the break and the home side enjoyed a lot more possession.

“We had to show another side to us,” admitted Emmanuel-Thomas. “Gillingham put us under pressure in the second half, but we dealt with it and defended well as a team.

“It is never going to be comfortable when you play away, because you know the home side are going to go direct and put a lot of balls into your box. With the formation we play, we get a lot of bodies behind the ball and that worked to our benefit.”

Making a rare start, Emmanuel-Thomas certainly did his cause no harm at all when scoring a wonderful goal from 25 yards out, summoning pin-point accuracy to side-foot the ball past Gills keeper Stuart Nelson.

He revealed: “My initial thought when I got the ball was to slide Kieran Agard in, but then I saw that he was already being marked.

“I had two options and the other one was to go for goal myself. I then had to decide whether to use my power and blast it or try and pass it in. Fortunately, I made the right choice and picked my spot.”

    Good result

If we're going to have a small run in the FA Cup then here's hoping for a home tie in Round 2 and a big fish in R3. With limited capacity at the gate we're probably better off going to a Liverpool, Chelsea, Man U, Man C, Newcastle etc
