Catts will he or won't he? plus the rest... MARTIN OâNeill admits Lee Cattermoleâs precarious disciplinary situation is giving him food for thought ahead of tomorrowâs trip to the Hawthorns. Cattermole collected his ninth yellow card of the season in last weekendâs FA Cup success against Arsenal â leaving him just one booking away from a two-game suspension. Black Cats boss OâNeill is wary of losing Cattermole for the Tyne-Wear derby on Sunday week and will consider the Sunderland skipperâs involvement against West Brom this weekend. OâNeill told the Echo: âIâll have a think about it. âItâs unlikely that Lee will see it through until April 8 without getting another booking. Weâd need a lot of postponements! âItâs a two-match ban as well if he gets another booking so itâs a problem. âBut then you can afflict yourself with it if you start thinking about it too much.â Regardless of Cattermoleâs involvement tomorrow, OâNeill is considering changing the side which triumphed against the Gunners in the FA Cup fifth round. OâNeill deployed a five-man midfield against Arsenal, with striker Fraizer Campbell restricted to a brief cameo as a late substitute. But as Sunderland look to take advantage of West Bromâs three month run without a home victory, OâNeill has the option of installing Campbell back in the starting line-up along with fellow striker Nicklas Bendtner, available again after he was ineligible against parent club Arsenal following his recovery from a broken nose. âI think Fraizer and Bendtner will come into contention tomorrow,â said OâNeill. âFriazer played most of the game on the right-hand side in the league game against Arsenal and Iâm well aware that while heâs played a lot of times there, itâs not really the position I envisage him in. âBendtnerâs been training with us now for some considerable time. âObviously he was ineligible to play against Arsenal, but heâs ready now. Of course, Nick thinks heâs always ready so thatâs not a problem. âIâve been pleased with his performances here. I think heâs done well and thereâs definitely more to come from him. âJust recently, itâs been a bit stop-start with the injury. I thought he did pretty well at Stamford Bridge, then we came back and he only lasted 10 minutes or so against Swansea. âFraizer Campbell has come into the fold as well and heâs given us a big boost. âBut then last Saturday against Arsenal, Bendtner aside, it was probably as strong a squad as Iâve been able to choose from since the Blackburn game. âWith the two loan players coming in, theyâve given us a boost although theyâve not been able to force their way in because the teamâs been playing pretty well.â Meanwhile, Sunderland midfielder David Vaughan is closing in on a return after recovering from an ankle injury. While tomorrowâs game may come just too soon for Vaughan, OâNeill believes the Welsh international will be fit for Wednesdayâs Gary Speed memorial match against Costa Rica. OâNeill added: âDavidâs coming on really well. Last week he was feeling really good and heâs been out running with the physioâs and fitness coach. âI think he would be fit for the Wales game next week.â
I like Catts, but he does pick them up, doesn't he? He's been better of late, but we need him against the mags' midfield if we're to get anything from the derby game.
“Obviously he was ineligible to play against Arsenal, but he’s ready now. Of course, Nick thinks he’s always ready so that’s not a problem. “I’ve been pleased with his performances here. I think he’s done well and there’s definitely more to come from him. “Just recently, it’s been a bit stop-start with the injury. I thought he did pretty well at Stamford Bridge, then we came back and he only lasted 10 minutes or so against Swansea." No ego stroking just telling it like it is. The first sentence was great. And then. "Did pretty well at the bridge", not Marty's usual, "did brilliantly", when some one has performed really well. He knows the lad has potential, here's hoping he can get the best out of him.
