Could one of these four fit the bill at Bristol City if head coach Lee Johnson were leave BS3?
    By Danjnewman | Posted: January 23, 2017

Under-pressure Lee Johnson has overseen eight straight defeats for Bristol City in the Sky Bet Championship

Fans have rampantly been calling for Lee Johnson's sacking after Bristol City suffered a club-record eighth successive Sky Bet Championship defeat last weekend.

The under-pressure head coach has watched his side go from the play-offs to 20th place since October – and now many supporters want Johnson to say his goodbyes.

City host promotion-chasing Sheffield Wednesday next Tuesday in the league, and then Rotherham on the Saturday, so results are needed if Johnson is to remain at the helm.

If he were to be relieved of his duties, here are a few candidates who could be in the frame to replace the former Oldham and Barnsley chief.

    Gary Rowett

The 42-year-old was sensationally relieved of his duties at Birmingham City just a few months ago despite leading them to the Championship play-offs.

Ironically new Blues boss Gianfranco Zola is without a win since taking over – he's been in charge for eight matches.

Rowett has seen his stock rise massively since departing St Andrew's and he has been linked with all manner of Premier League and Football League sides.

City fans have been bounding around Rowett's name on social media as the person they want to replace Johnson.

A report in a national newspaper last week even claimed he is keeping a watchful eye over the situation at Ashton Gate.

    Michael Appleton

The Oxford United boss has been one the bookies' favourites for the England under-21 manager role in recent weeks but a decision by the FA is yet to be made on who will be handed the post.

Former City manager Steve Cotterill, Aidy Boothroyd and Stuart Pearce were thought to have all been interviewed.

Anyway, back to City. Most City fans have squirmed at the thought of Appleton taking charge at Ashton Gate – they want someone more experienced.

Appleton led United to promotion last season from League Two and saw them suffer a defeat to Barnsley in the Johnstone's Paint Trophy final. Oxford currently sit 12th in League One.

As fans call for Gary Rowett, Appleton might be the best they can get considering their current position.

    Nigel Pearson

Are City after an experienced head to keep them in the Sky Bet Championship? Well look no further than Nigel Pearson, who is currently unemployed.

The former Hull and Southampton boss might have had a few squabbles with the media, owners and players in the past but he likes a good relegation scrap.

He had shambolic spell at Derby County this season when he left the club in September after only being appointed in May.

While City sit above the drop zone but defeats to Sheffield Wednesday and Rotherham could leave the Robins in the bottom three.

Pearson's second spell in charge of Leicester City saw them promoted to the Premier League. He also guided them to top flight safety during the 2014/15 campaign despite Leicester sitting bottom at Christmas.

    John Pemberton

Currently Johnson's right-hand man, is it time for Pemberton to be handed the reins?

The former defender was put in charge for a spell alongside Wade Elliott when Steve Cotterill was shown the exit door at Ashton Gate last year, leading the Robins to a shock victory over Middlesbrough, who would later go on to be promoted to the Premier League.

He seems to be held in high regard at BS3 – have City got a future head coach under right their noses?

In the running for good measure: Alan Curbishley

This is a copy/paste Post article suggesting candidates for a possible job with the City, to be honest I could not face another poll but if you want to participate in one go to the bottom of the page and hit the link, at the end of the article is a poll awaiting you..

None of them. Appleton less than impressive, Rowett and Pemberton nowhere near the experience needed in my opinion. Pearson, if he wasn't a complete loon, he might have been a good choice, but no good to us now, ego the size of Greenland.

Warburton.... Done an outstanding job with Brentford, every player I've heard talk about him who has been coached by him have said he has the exact attributes to manage England one day.

Not having a particularly good time at Rangers, as slowly recognised it's going to be a 1 team (Celtic) league for at least another decade. Playing 6th rate European sides surely can't mean much.

The draw of finances to compete, stability in a long term owner who gives his managers time even during times like these, and a sizeable contract offer could tempt him to the Gate!

    Pearson is gettable though.

Pearson is the best of that bunch, problem is he's a bully who loses the dressing room after a season or so of his bully boy tactics, so appointing him is a real gamble, and not likely to be a long term and progressive appointment for the club. As for the rest, their management pedigree is no more than LJs was when he was appointed, yet I'll bet anyone of them will be more well received on here by a lot of people than LJ ever was.y

Said last year my choice was Monk and I can remember people saying at the time. He has not got the experience, he was lucky to get Swansea etc. Look at how well he is doing now and to think he was gettable this time last year.
People want Gary Rowlett because he's available but we will possibly be looking at managers currently in employment as well.
I wouldn't be surprised if / when the axe falls on LJ if we don't go caretaker the remainder of the year and I'm not necessarily talking JP. Lots of old school managers out there who could be tempted with a 6 month deal.

Out of the 4 then I'd say Rowett who has got a decent amount of experience at this level.

Warburton would be a very good candidate, but I really can't see him being tempted away from Rangers
