Sorry it's not football, but it's definitely Norwich related! http://www.norwichadvertiser24.co.u...on_a_bike_to_support_stadium_scheme_1_1674237
My old man used to regale me with tales of "Billy Bales coming round the Caister Bend", bit before my time all that but anything good enough for my dad is certainly good enough for me
Somewhere in my loft is a signed photo of him, that was given to me by another ex-rider called Peter Atkins who I worked with in the late sixties, he still had his JAP engined bike. He would bring it in occasionally and tear round the car park on it!!
What a legend Ove is! Have great memories of going to see the Stars with my father in the sixties. Grew up in nearby St Faiths, so even when I didn't go, I could still hear them!
The noise and the smell of Castrol "R" are abiding memories, also coming home covered in cinder dust!! Loved it!
Of all the exciting memories, the one that is right at the top is the smell! I can still smell it now! Glorious times!
When I first read the title I thought your were going to say 'Moses'! I am a great Ipswich Witches Speedway fan and my uncle is the great John Louis who used to skipper the team in the 70s
Yeah I remember you had the great Michael Lee riding for Lynn in those days, awesome rider! These days I follow the Witches but also the Mildenhall Fen Tigers who are going under a revival at the minute!
The smell, the cinders, the noise and the Golden Helmet. And the nucleus of them is the greatest of them all, Ove Fundin. Five times World Champion and he didn't have his own bike! He rode the team spare. Ask Vettel to win driving a Toro Rosso! I really hope it comes back to Norwich but in reality where are all the British riders? Kings Lynn haven't got a Brit starter. Bomber Harris (Cornish lad) hass been dropped from the GP to be replaced by Tai Wofenden who is British born but has an Aussie accent. Scotty Nicholls is past it and Lee Richardson dead. Can anyone remember Cycle Speedway?
Used to be very popular - we had a track on a field in Spixworth, later sadly reclaimed by the farmer. They built one in the middle of Spixworth later, which I believe is being/has been refurbished. The original one was opened, I believe, by the great Trevor Hedge of speedway fame. I often walk my dog on North Tuddenham common, and, rather strangely, they have recently erected a plaque commemorating the site of an old track there. The rusty upright starting posts are still visible! Actually grew up just up the road in Newton St Faiths, although I seem to have spent an obscene amount of time in the King's Head (sadly no longer a pub), as the pub in Newton closed in the sixties. Just found out that the Crown Garage also used to be a pub. I never knew that! It was in Hellesdon opposite the Firs pub at the top of Fifers Lane. One of the first dwellings built on the site was called 'Fundin House', a nice gesture, but scant compensation for what we lost!
A good mate of mine used to rave about the cycle speedway in Norwich, he told me he once made the starting gate during works time at L & S. Sadly he passed away 3/4 years ago, mad as hell but a great friend!
