Fulham last beat Chelsea at Craven Cottage in March 2006 when Luis Boa Morte scored the game’s only goal and William Gallas was sent off. And it was a feisty affair on and off the pitch

Players from the home team surrounded referee Mike Dean to insist that Didier Drogba had handled the ball before rolling it into the net. The goal was rightly disallowed but Dean decided the scrum of protesting Fulham players urging him to consult his linesman had not pressurised him.

An FA spokesman said: "Mike Dean confirmed that, in his view, the conduct of Fulham players in the 57th minute did not warrant a report to the FA." The referee felt differently, however, about Chelsea players who confronted the linesman after William Gallas was sent off in the last minute for a nasty tackle on Heidar Helguson.

An FA spokesman said: "Referee Mike Dean and assistant referee Andy Williams reported to the FA that, in their view, a number of players had surrounded Williams in an aggressive manner."

All of which led up to

Supporters clashing after Fulham fans ran on to the pitch to celebrate the 1-0 win and Chelsea supporters broke through barricades.

Fulham chairman Mohamed Al Fayed said: "Some of them are hooligans but most of them behaved."

The Football Association is also expected to investigate the trouble. Around 30 to 50 Chelsea fans charged through the stewards in response to taunts by Fulham supporters and around five or six fights broke out across the pitch.

Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho said he was disappointed if there had been problems with the crowd. He said: "We have unbelievable fans and I feel sorry for them because we didn't get the result. They always support us in a great way. I hope they are unhappy with the result but they can control themselves. I also hope Fulham know how to win. I know this is not something that happens a lot for them but I hope they can interpret the big victory in a good way and respect Chelsea people."

Fulham boss Chris Coleman said: "I'm told there was a bit of trouble and there were one or two idiots on the pitch. There's no place for idiots at Fulham."
