" Quite possibly the worst performance I’ve ever seen ".

Another day and another win for Brentford, this time over Bristol City.

With Wolves and Leyton Orient both recording 2-0 victories to keep pace with the League One leaders (that’s us), it was an important three points to pick up.

However, it was the manor of the victory which was somewhat odd, quite simply because Bristol City were one of, if not THE, the poorest side I have seen all season. I’d like to think I’m quite objective and will always give our opponents due respect where deserved but my reaction on leaving Griffin Park was more, “You’ve got to feel sorry for their fans”.

It was a game in which I’m amazed a red card wasn’t shown to a team intent on their own destruction. A comedy own goal within the opening ten minutes from Aden Flint gave us the first. The second, after a great move, was finished by my man of the match Alan Judge although, being honest, I thought Elliot Parish in the City goal should really have kept it out. Certainly his reaction suggested so.

This is all before you factor in the worst free kick I’ve ever seen. Perhaps us Brentford fans have been spoilt in recent weeks with some of Sam Saunders efforts, but this was truly woeful. Derrick Williams, rather than deliver a killer deadball into the box from 25 yards, simply bobbled the ball directly out of play for a goal kick to Brentford. It went closer to the corner flag than the goal and was an effort that made Miguel Llera seem like Gazza. It must have been soul destroying for the City fans.

Quite frankly, the only crumb of comfort that the visitors could take was former Bee Karleigh Osborne’s wonderful strike from the right wing position which, temporarily, levelled things on twelve minutes. This was his last meaningful action as despite his goal being cheered by the Brentford fans (how popular?) he injured himself in the process and then limped off. From that point it really was game over.

To be fair, I didn’t think we were great – certainly not in terms of chances created – it was just that City were dreadful. It comes to something when you have to talk more about the opposition than your own team but that’s just how I saw it. Even their fans had switched off with the passion that Uwe so aspired to earlier in the campaign being anything but evident for most of the game.

However, three points are three points and Brentford are still top of the league. Even better, we don’t need to add ‘as it stands’ to that song, as it stands.

Next up, Shrewsbury. Will the injuries have cleared up? Will the transfer window (slam) shut, leaving our squad intact? Will the local press continue to insist we are signing Rob Kiernan?

One thing you can be sure, it’s going to be an interesting few days and, come ‘Deadline Day’, I’ll be glued to Natalie Sawyer and Jim White’s coverage hoping that no news is good news.

Until then, totally un-football related but one of my favourite video clips from last year and it may provide some light relief. Some trainspotters who, much like ‘away’ fans, take hours out of their day to prepare for ‘that moment’ only to have it cruelly snatched away…..

    When I read comments like..

    * Worst performance I've ever seen it makes me wonder..

    * Bristol City were one of, if not THE, the poorest side I have seen.

    * A team intent on their own destruction.

    * It was just that City were dreadful.

    * You’ve got to feel sorry for their fans.

These were not piss take comments but a genuine opposing fans opinion, it makes me shudder, how low we have sunk, I hope SC has got this situation under control..

Not sure if he has now Wize.
I will admit to jumping on the "Steve Cotterill has turned us around" bandwagon a few weeks back but now, after a few more weeks, I am just as disillusioned as I have ever been.
Sure we have just played the 1st and 3rd placed teams, but other than the odd 15 or 20 minute spell in the 90 played, we just don't seem like a team thats going to escape the drop zone any time soon. The defence seemed to be getting better then we sign AEA and look what happens...more comical defending and cock-ups...with AEA even being played out of position! No midfield general on board yet, no out and out winger....no hope?
Just another season to wish away..........getting all to familiar now.

Give it a few more games before we get the black cap on and pull out the hatchet.

Time for Cottrell to show his ability and knock it into shape for the most important group of City matches in 20 years
Otherwise he might just as well follow all the other losers.

We should NEVER have got rid of Johnson

I know the whole Gary Johnson things been done to death (old news, history, move on and all that) but they certainly were some of...if not THEE...best years in recent history wern't they.
Hopefully Cotts can turn us around next season and emulate them.....

The only consolation is that despite our apparent piss poor efforts, the other teams around us are not pulling away and two or three good results could still lift us out of the hole we are in. The problem is though, we aren't the team that can apparently put the run of good results together. We are sinking so low that we take draws as positives.

Having supported this club for the best part of 40 years, I can honestly say that our current plight is right up there with the darkest days if Div 1 to Div 4 in successive seasons. It's beyond me that we are in this situation despite the vast sums of money that SL has invested - we are simply an embarrassment.

If you performed like this under SL's daytime banner you would have been unemployed years ago, which begs the question as to why he sits back and lets his football club perform like idiots and make a mockery of his misspent monies. The entire operation has become an embarrassment to it's supporters who turn out in all weathers to spend their money only to be insulted by the lack of effort from all and sundry.

"Cotts needs to kick their arses into shape:

Modern footballers are pussies, they will cry and say their not playing for us anymore if they get shouted at.! those days are gone. look what happened to DiCanio when he tried it. modern football seems to be about man management skills and 'arms around the player'.

    Its a society thing.
