    On Sky Sport Tonight..

    ' COTTERILL GETS REAL '

Bristol City manager Steve Cotterill spoke to SSNHQ earlier, saying the club would struggle financially in the Championship if they were to go up. His side are currently three points clear at the top of League One.

“Our playing budget probably isn’t as big as a couple of teams in our league. Everybody will say ‘I don’t believe that’, but it’s a fact. We have a chief executive who speaks to a few people so we know what is going on.

"What has helped us is we have had some finances to go and cherry pick a few players. So we have been able to do that to buy some young players but then we have ended up getting that money back in and are in the plus column because we sold Sam Baldock, so thankfully that has worked out well in the end.

"We have been able to cherry pick our players but if we go into the Championship we would be struggling with what we are on that’s for sure.”

A bit early to be talking about the Championship but it's good to let people know we are not a moneybags type club anymore.

"a couple of teams in our League". Sheffield United maybe. I guess Peterborough had the Assombolonga money, and their Chairman talked about spending half a million on a player. But not sure who else has a much bigger playing budget. I think we are all in the same boat, give or take 10%.

Think he means playing budget for wages etc. We have gone from having the biggest wage bill down to a respectable level.

The trouble is that we cannot get in much revenue from tickets while we are carrying out the necessary improvements to Ashton Gate, short term pain for long term gain!

Something needs to be done long term about the Championship - clubs relegated from the Premier League have £60m parachute payments over 4 years.
Brighton had the biggest average gates in the Championship last year and they are struggling to compete

Hence why the Championship Play Off final is THE most lucrative game for the winner in World Football!! It all could have been so different for us had we bought/loaned a decent striker in our play off year......
