Liverpool are 8th with 31 points. We are only 6 points behind them with 16 games to play? I think this should be our target and whilst this will be a tough ask, there is no reason we shouldn't have it as a target. After all, we are as close to that as we are the relegation trapdoor and if we are capable of slipping backwards then we are also capable of climbing upwards. This is true of most of the clubs in and around us btw so no easy ask but achievable nonetheless. Discuss
One game at a time is the old adage. I agree as a Club objective we should be aiming for something like that at this stage of O'Neal's regime. Things look pretty good at this point after a sticky time but there is much to be done. I think we can take confidence in that MON has made his assessment of the playing strength of the squad and is now seeking to improve on problem areas. Full marks to Ellis for backing his manager. Things appear to be looking up but we are only a few points out of the danger zone- so one game at a time.
One game at a time? That's my whole point though. 6 from 8th spot and 6 from relegation. Our season can go either way of course but we are not a million miles from a very good position imo.
7th would be my aim. After the top 6 (Man C+U, Chelsea, Spurs, Arsenal & Everton) I think we are the best team of the also rans. May be difficult this season after our poor start but if confidence soars and we perform like MONs honeymoon period its possible.
I think we'll finish around where we are now. We'll continue to win a few lose a few draw a few and get between 40-45 points
We should be looking for 7 from the next 9. Wigan A Swansea H Reading A None of those games are easy, Swansea in particular are a very good side, but we can win all of those, i'll be disappointed if we lose one. If we get 5-7 out of them, then we can start to think about top 10.
If we beat West Brom down their patch then I think 8th will be within reach providing Cueller doesn't step foot on the pitch for the remainder of the season. Liverpool will finish above Brom, probably 7th, Brom will drop further down the league.
Anything is possible Cest but at present we are far too inconsistent for 8th. We shot ourselves in the foot with the stuttering start we had and have thrown points away by letting teams go 2 up before we started. I'd be more than happy with 10th this season but reckon we will be about 12/13th.
A toon poster said on their forum today that typical mackems have a decent win or couple of results and we are talking about Europe or top 8. Unfortunately I'm inclined to agree that we do tend to jump the gun and get carried away, also like somebody said we need to stay realistic and we to inconsistent (at the moment) to be thinking like this. We are still only about 5pts above relegation and a bad result next game will put us right back in the ****. Having said all that, I wrongly called for MON's head a few months back. I took for granted his transfer policy and assumed things like that wouldn't change. He has proved me wrong and believe me it is a lesson learned, I hope yours aren't to harsh on me and realise that everyone has been in my position sometime in their lives, and called it wrong. (I still think the personal abuse I got was unwarranted for what was just an opinion at the end of the day). I can see what Mon is doing now and feel a lot more positive about our future and where we are heading as a club. Onwards and upwards from here and like I say, I've learned my lesson from this and it will also help me in other decisions in life.
Well played 83. Need bollocks to own up to being wrong. Not sure who gave you personal abuse but that's just daft.
No doubt just frustrated as we all were and passionate, who isn't. I think MON has learned some lessons himself & had to change tact, which with some improved incomings will prove dividends.
Its just a game of opinions kidda and the world would be pretty lame if we all agreed on everything all the time. As for getting carried away I'm certainly not. There is still a lot of footy to play but my post here is merely stating that we are 6 points from 8th spot and 6 from relegation which is finely balanced indeed. However, we have to kick on and have in the next 8 games a chance to put some distance between us and 3rd bottom and gain on the 8th placed Liverpool. I'm not saying we will do it but suggesting we should be aiming for it. Nothing deluded or over the top there me thinks for the barcode brethren to get all worked up about.
What about the mighty LFC? They're the best club ever apparently, they've got Shteeeeve Gerrard don't you know? Your teeth are offside, your teeth are offside, Luis Suarez your teeth are offside.
8th is good to aim for. But realistically, solidifying our position and pushing towards the top half is where we'll end up. 11th if I had to say.
