HULL City's longest-serving employee Freddie Cowell has retired after 34 years at the club. Cowell has been a constant fixture since first joining the Tigers youth team set-up in 1978 but has finally opted to call it a day aged 85. During his time with City, Cowell has been responsible for spotting the best talent in East Yorkshire in his tireless role as youth scout. The former teacher has most recently enjoyed a position working closely with Billy Russell and Neil Mann at City's Ideal Standard School of Excellence. During his three decades of service Cowell has seen 20 different managers come and go. "I can honestly say I've enjoyed every minute of it," said Cowell. "I've seen promotions and relegations, countless managers and I'll miss the place." For a full interview with Freddie Cowell, see tomorrow's Game On! I will be reading this interview. A true gentleman and a great lover of football. My old school teacher too, if schools had teachers like Fred now things would improve rapidly. They'd start playing football and cricket a hell of a lot more. I remember a full maths lesson getting taken over as we managed to get Fred on about cricket and fielding postions. 3 blackboards taken up with an explanation of each position and how to bowl to left handed and right handed batsmen andhow to set the field.
I thought he was older too. He hasnt altered a bit though last time i saw him about 3 years ago. Flat cap and mac on, shirt and tie always!! So you're an Endike lad then Dutch??
Well deserves a KC pitch 2 minutes worth of applause for all he has done. Hope he enjoys his feet up time. Great chap. All the Best Freddie.
I remember when I was 45 reading that my old headmaster had died. I always thought he was a Mister Chips type figure who had stayed on because of his love of teaching. Turned out he was the same age, 45, the year I left school
I read this and thought I'd been disrespectful on an RIP thread before I saw the dates. The article is a fitting tribute to a true gentleman who contributed a lot to many people. RIP Fred.
