The crop of kids we have now does rekindle memories of the 75/76 season when we threw the kids in. The big difference is this is a planned event, back then it was forced on us. That said I remember standing in the Roker End watching Rowell, Arnott, Elliott, Chisholm and being blown away with their performances. Today we have, Rigg, Jobe, Ballard, Cirkin, Hume etc etc.. it’s a joy to watch
We were in the Fulwell End feeling the same, it was absolutely manic wasn't it. The players just seemed to think 'balls to this' and went for the jugular, the opposition just wilted. But it was too adrenalin-filled to last ... ... and it didn't
Very true… knocked 6 past West Ham, 6 past West Brom and 4 past Boro Another difference this time is the manager… I bitched on about how long the process took, but he was worth the wait.. The guy has a steely calmness that resonates among the squad.. these are good days
It's all like a mind control experiment in a sci-fi film isn't it. The players are so switched on and doing exactly what they've been programmed to do. And we may as well have sold Patterson tbh ... ... he's barely made a contribution this season
It was the 76/77 season mate when we got relegated, throw them in and nearly stayed up. 75/76 we won the second division to go up. 75/76 the first season I properly remember after going 74-75. Not stopped since, love the bastards. HTL KTF
I would’ve been 9/10 for that season. I remember some of the scores mentioned. Didn’t start going regularly until 1977/78. Still got to see Rowell et al weave their magic though.
That's when I was hooked by the lads, at the age of 12. My username is taken from an echo article, may have been a little later, on the great partnership of Elliott and Clarke - Elliott was my first safc hero. We seem to have had few spells since where the lads have been a joy to watch, but this current crop have definitely rekindled my desires at the ripe old age of 61... probably aided by an adrenaline kick from my 15 year old son, who's refound his mojo for watching the lads... Hhhaaa'wwwwaaaaayyyyyy the lads
Little fuzzy you say... I cannot recall much about our team back then. Maybe due to the fact I survived on a diet of eggy bread, spaghetti hoops on toast, mince and vegetables on a Tuesday, sugar on all cereals, and salt on a stick of cellery... and the highlight of the week, sausage, chips, curry sauce and a buttered bun from Fulwell chippy on a Saturday lunch time - sitting in front of the TV watching Saint and Greavesy... all these events could of occurred quite independently and in different decades
At the risk of being pedantic, I think Chisholm came later. My memory is that Arnott, Elliott and Rowell were the ones thrown in who somehow galvanised an otherwise workmanlike but dispirited side.
Kevin Arnott was a Rolls Royce of a player. Still remember the 3 games we won 4-0 4-0 & 6-0 in 8 days. 2 of which were West Ham & The SMOGGIES. Unreal Bart
Oh god this is bringing tears to my eyes - those three games and sooo near survival. Man that is forever engraved in my memory banks. Silly owld bugger that l am. KTF
