It looks like Janmaat will come through the door on another 6 year contract.
I think it's a good idea putting players like this on such a long contract for three clear reasons.

1- They are locked in on a wage structure which makes budgeting easier
2- If they improve immensely they are locked into a 'lower wage' vs their market value
3- If they are poached by other clubs these clubs will have to pay through the nose

Some may think such long contracts are way OTT but... looking at it from a business point of view it's merely a case of protecting our investment.

    Thoughts?

I think lesser contracts should be given to young inexperienced players but with Janmaat and Cabella they are solid, proven internationals.
Granted they are unproven in the PL and may indeed prove to be ****e but for me it's about backin a winnner and where you have a talent who you but at less than full market value (Cabella apparently cost £7m up front in the end vs a £12-15m value).
Ultimately though, every player is a gamble...

It's all risk / reward. We've all seen players flop in the PL yet go on to excel in other leagues. I do think the risk is worth taking on established players rather than up and comers though. At least if they do flop but are remembered as doing well before then that will hold their value a bit

I'm all for it. It's just security for the club if other clubs try to poach them.

I think its a great approach and I totally agree with it. Without it we wouldn't have got the money we did for Carroll, Cabaye or Debuchy. The other side of the same coin is that we will end up stuck paying wages to players that we don't want and that other clubs wouldn't touch with a barge pole, like Obertan and Ban Arfa, but these losses are more than offset by the fact that our scouting team seems to get it right more often than it gets it wrong.
