Is it the whole academy or just the 23s and 18s who are getting hammered every week? The younger age groups are regularly winning their leagues I think, then off to Arsenal, Liverpool etc to sign professional terms.
Then I'd suggest we are the victim of the position we now find ourselves in through the gross mismanagement of the club for over a decade. ie a cat one academy in league one. If I was a top 6 Premier league scout, our academy (u16 and below) is exactly where I would look for new talent. If I was a player being released from a decent team, our u23s is also exaclty where I would look to go to.
it's no coincidence a lot of our young 18+ talent is getting poached, or clubs are attempting to poach them, for peanuts.
judging by the Anfield score, maybe they sent the first team out against our lot with West Ham facing the Liverpool U23s?

Look at the premier league... How many of our academy products play there and are good enough comfortably?
