24th November 1962 my mate Martin Lakin (if you see this Martin please get in touch) encouraged me to go to my first Leicester match at Filbert Street. We arrived before the gates opened and took our place in the kop end at 1.30. That day moulded the rest of my life====I had watched the 60/61 cup final in black and white on our 13" tv which dominated our front room but had never seen a proper match in the flesh. As the kop filled up I started to replace my boredom with excitement and when finally at 2.50 the teams came out my life changed. The match ended 0-0. At half time we had a team of baton twirling majorettes - a change from the usual brass band as I later found out and in The People the next morning after I had run downstairs to be first to see the paper I finally found the match report on this 90 minutes of electrifying erntertainment and the headline on the single column report was......GIRLS STEAL THE SHOW======================I couldnt believe it because I was still floating on my football cloud. The rest as they say is history---I was spoilt early with the great Matt Gillies team--I witnessed the Bloomfield era with possibly the best team in the country at the time---Martins team too but of course Ive seen the dross too and there has been a lot of that---worst team in my time?==easy --Franks foxes---sorry Frank you were a great player but a worse manager than Peter Ttaylor. Ramble over
That's no ramble Glyn - That's pure Leicester gold - A memory so vivid every detail is crystal clear in its description 50 years later. Thanks mate And what a post for your 600th
This is a great story. The first match I can remember my dad taking me to wa Cambridge at home in the play offs. I think it ended 5-1, my dad had me skip primary school to travel from Sussex. A great day out followed by many more!
Hi Glynn. I’ve been reading this forum since the old BBC one closed down. I also read Ja too. I don’t post personally because I don’t get to the games so don’t have the most valid opinions. I come on here to read from people like yourself who have watched the games so I can get a better understanding of what has really happened on the pitch. Anyway I’ve read with interest many of your posts over almost 2 years. So what’s the point? LOL well today’s the day I realised that you’re my uncle!
