After the trials and tribulation at Fratton park over the past year or so, today is a happy time to be a Pompey fan. Last night's win against S(c)unthorpe lifted us upto the dizzy heights of 12 and a TOP HALF position; something we could only dream of at the end of August. Five wins on the bounce doesn't come to us Pompey fans all that often, so I thought I'd check back through the records to see the last three times it happened. 2002-03 Between 17/08/02 and 17/09/02 we won SEVEN league games in a row, which put us on our way to the Division One (Championship) championship and pronotion to the premier League. 1996/97 A run of five straight wins from 18/1/97-22/2/97 saw us jump from 14th to 8th. Interestingly enough, after 1st March and 34 games, we had 49 points, just two more than now. We ended the season in 7th with 68 points, one place and three points adrift of the play-offs. 1992-93 A Double Whammy: Six wins from 6/3-27/3 and another 5 from 6/4-24/4 were interrupted by a 1-1 draw at Millwall on 3/4. We finished 3rd, missing out on automatic promotion by ONE GOAL. We finished a massive 9 points clear of 4th placed Tranmere but a 3-2 aggregate loss to Leicester in the playoff semi final broke our hearts. Let's hope we can make it Six-Of-The-Best against Sheffield Utd at Fratton Park on Saturday please log in to view this image
Not often! the last time as you say was when we won promotion to the Premier League, I suspect we will win on Saturday and extend the run against the Blades, and then who knows?. The play offs whilst unlikely are still possible although our final 5 games run in, look quite tough! PUP
But have any runs, like this one we are in the midst of, remained goal free? Has any team ever won 5+ in a row and not conceded? If we bosh Sheffield Utd on Saturday, without letting a goal in, it must be a record. A big win would probably see the back of Micky Adams, for which they should all write individual thank you letters to us. How that guy ever gets work in football is beyond my comprehension.
In the six game run of '93, the first was a 2-1 win [over Luton]. The next five were all clean sheets. Our most recent run of 5 league games without conceding was in our first 5 games of 2006-07. This consisted of 4 wins and a 0-0 draw with Man City. If we do beat the Blades, we will travel to Bristol City looking for our seventh win in a row for the first time since 1982-83 (when we won the Third Division [League One] title) We had two runs of six consecutive clean sheets in the Fourth Division in 1978-79 I have checked back as far as World War Two and can confirm that, since the war at least, we have never, even in the back-to-back Championship seasons, managed seven consecutive clean sheets in the league, so the current side is 180 minutes from making history
