now that they have changed it back to only 5 subs that is gonna hinder the youngsters in the squad from getting game time, very dissapointing as i think the wadfather will go more with the experienced players to warm the bench.we have a wealth of young talent coming through the ranks and it would be a shame if they dont get a chance this season ,even 20 mins at the end of a game .another stupid idea if you ask me.

What is this 5 subs rule? Is it that you can only name 5 on the bench meaning you can substitute from any 3 of the 5? If so, I really don't understand what reasoning could have brought about the introduction of such a stupid idea. I'm sure there are more important things than that to attend to.

Im quite glad they have gone back to 5 subs and I dont really see it as hindering the development of youngsters. If a youngster is good enough they will force their way through. I think 5 subs is plenty enough to cover at least a sub for each of defence, midfield and attack, a reserve keeper and a.n.other which can be an in form/promising youngster. Anymore than 5 and I think we are in danger of becoming like American team sports where we have the rest of the first team squad sitting on the bench. In the early 90's it was 3 named subs only and youngsters still came through then.

I also see that teams can still name 7 subs in the League Cup so I think the decision is ok.

The football league clubs voted to change back to 5 subs largely for financial reasons. The extra costs of 2 more subs every week such as squad appearance money and extra hotel rooms for away trips mount up over a season for clubs already struggling financially. And a lot of clubs were naming less that 7 subs some weeks anyway, including us.

I agree with devonblue that good enough young players will still get through and it's the withdrawal of a reserve team that will have a much bigger effect on their development.

Yeah I'm with Devon Blue and Wandermagic, I agree that going back to 5 subs is good. I don't think it will hamper any youngsters, we used to get good young players on the bench before the 7 subs rule came in and we will continue to do so. In fact, in the last couple of seasons, half the time we didn't even have 7 subs as we didn't have enough fit players, so I don't think it will make any difference on the field. But it will save us cash off the field, and I have a feeling we may well need that cash over the next few years.
