So we are going to be 100% 5 subs next season (I don't really agree with it)

    Prem, Domestic cups and CL.

What will our tactics be to make the most out of this

    a) Full backs? With tsimikas and Ramsay now in the squad plus gomez will we see more subs earlier for robertson and trent? In theory they cover a lot of miles up and down the line.

    b) Forwards? The classic area for managers to make change without affecting defending capability. A bit more salah coming off as the creaking old man wanes? a bit more jota/firmino coming on?

    c) Midfield? some rotation for henderson and thiago? more creaking old bones there.

I think we will probably see a bit more 60 minute men in the team now. Thiago and henderson 100%.
Maybe 1 forward and one full back subbed?
then 1 sub held for injury.

Reminds me of the shag classic. (American definition of shag... Although British definition applies here too)

Expect more changes with 75-80 minutes gone when the game is won. In tight games, less so.

yep, that too. Think that for certain things, they need to consider stopping the clock now….ball in play time is on average something like 55 minutes. City 59m, Brighton, Liverpool 57m at the top. Villa 49m at the bottom. Something has to be done soon.

It's great that players can potentially get more rest but it clearly favours the big clubs who can bring on quality.

    I like it.

I think personally a lot of clubs under rate their squads and over play players as well.

I think it does favour really big teams but it does help all.

If you are Burnley and whinging about this before you lost your job :) (dyche) but you've actually got injuries and issues then it will actually help!

If i was bottom half club I would write off every game v top 6 clubs and really focus o nthe other bottom half teams. 9 teams x 2 games x 3 points = 54 points. I never need to win a top half game.

A game = Top 6 - get through with as few goals as possible.
    B game = 7 to 10 - don't need to win but can give a game.
C game = 11-20 - games you need to win.

I'd make 5 subs in the A games and just get my players through. A 0-2 loss is as good as a point with gd. I just dont want to be spanked 5 or 6

In the c games then I really want my 16.man squad (and they all have them no matter what they pretend) to be sued to absolutely work for the win.

There is no difference. I am saying lfc will get 60 games put of trent plus whoever and burnley would have only needed 38 plus 2 or 3 out of their players so they can run just as hard and swap.

Imo it certainly favours an oil doper who can have 9 top class subs and kill sides but in reality teams all have at least 16 players cos they wouldn't be in the prem if they did not.

A lot of closed minds to this.

However.... all that being said, for a fan will the games lose the flow and become **** like they did in the pandemic? I think they will.

I don’t get this point of view.

Favours them how? In games where it’s top 4 v top 4, doesn’t really make much difference as everyone has similar quality.

if it’s 20th v 19th then would think it would be similar quality squad.

if it’s 1st v 20th, they already have better players and squad so being able to bring on 2 more players doesn’t make a huge difference. How many times do teams fighting relegation beat teams at top of the table?

You could say it will allow the lower teams to potentially rest more of their players (sub them off) when games have been won or games are lost after 60 minutes so they can keep more of their better players fresher for the season.

Off course it helps the big teams. If a team is digging in and doing well the big teams have better options to introduce and they could change the game. As you get further down the bench of the smaller clubs there isn't that quality there.

How many times do the big teams struggle against the smaller though?

And ok even if it does benefit the bigger teams. 20th place aren’t going to base their season on beating the top 6.

20th -17th are all in same situation where they will all struggle against the bigger teams so doesn’t really make much difference.

the teams that get relegated, their focus has to be on beating the 6 teams around them. In which case they don’t have any advantage/disadvantage over them.

could also say that if big teams are struggling to break down lower team, lower team now has 5 chances to freshen up their players who are probably more tired from defending all game. Can now bring on 5 ew defenders/midfielders to offer fresh legs to help defend those 0-0s.

Also as you go down the big teams, they don’t always have 5 brilliant players to bring on.

Say we go with diaz Nunez Salah.

we’d have Jota firmino as first 2 subs. Next options, Elliott? Ox? Jones? Hardly like bringing on 5 world class players to come on and secure the win.

I think you're trying to justify something that clearly helps the big teams by overthinking it. I'm just embracing the fact that my team now has more options off the bench which clearly helps us. You carry on though.

exactly this. In theory, a team could change half of their outfield players for some fresh legs without much of a dip in ability for the richer teams - so City could effectively introduce £400m worth of talent on the 75th minute if they’re struggling to break down a stubborn team…..whereas what could a team like Burnley do? No, this favours the biggest and richest teams without a doubt BUT is the right call.

Think about Man city V southampton say.

southampton are doing well and its 0-0 on 60mins. maybe even 0-1.

City always have the option at any time to throw on 3 subs today. however they now have to balance this against injury and losing team shape as players come in.

Now they can make 4 changes and save 1 for an injury or red card so its doubled from 2.

A team like Southampton will chug along and start to fatigue on 60/70mins. esp playng a top side. they then see city readying grealish and two others completely fresh nightmares to come on. Its cruel but in the end its not actually hugely different to city sending on 2.

What's forgotten is Southampton can thrown on 2 or 3 themselves to chase about. ESP changing the forwards to press up and chase and harass and really shut that easy attack v defence thing down.

the other thing is that Yellow cards can now be dealt with. your CM is on a yellow and can't kick a lump out of kdb or even challenge for fear. well now he can be removed and you can kick 7 shades out of KDB.

    see my post.

I'll tell you what they can do. they can send on 4 lads to kick 7 shades of **** out of these fresh players. take off the yellows and get stuck in.

yes "city" can but in reality if i saw a diver and a square runner like grealish come on and a real threat who runs at me come off it might be fine.

A lot of these sides seem to just want to pack 2 lines of 4 and a spare couple of forwards who are really just closing down. They start this at 1st min and really.... its about keeping the gaps closed. Surely they can find 4 ****ing ****houses who can keep doing that for 20-30mins.

Is the rule 5 subs, but only at three times, You can't stop the game five times to bring subs on?

The 3 times rule doesn't apply to halftime though that would be counted as an additional one.

9 players on the bench as well, dunno what it was last season 7 I think.
