    1. We’ll never see a more accomplished manager in our lifetime. Forty nine trophies is an incredible haul by one manager, and one that won’t be surpassed by any top flight manager in our lifetime.

    2. Beginning this summer, other teams in the Premier League will try to exploit the number one weakness at United — no Ferguson. This change could encourage clubs like Manchester City and Chelsea to spend more this summer with the knowledge that it could help them knock United off their perch.

    3. No matter who steps into Ferguson’s shoes, he’ll always be compared to Ferguson. The Scot has left such an amazing legacy at the club, that no matter how well or not the new boss does, it’ll be under Ferguson’s shadow.

    4. The fear factor is gone. Old Trafford has been a fortress for the past two decades. Without Ferguson managing the club, sides may be more adventurous when playing at Old Trafford knowing that they won’t be as intimidated as before. The same applies to referees who may not be as concerned by the pressure of making a key decision against United at Old Trafford.

    5. We could see a player exodus at United. I’m sure that one of the major reasons why several Manchester United players signed with the club was because of Sir Alex Ferguson. While the club and money has a strong hold on the players, it’s only to be expected that some players may decide to leave now that Ferguson is retiring. Don’t be surprised to see rival clubs trying to pluck key players away from Old Trafford.

Although this thread is a bit extreme, I do think TC is on to something. This isn't just a managerial change, it changes everything. Giggs, Scholes, Rooney, I wouldn't expect to see any of them in a Utd shirt again, & there's a lot of other players who for various reasons are in the same boat. There's a massive rebuild required, probably why Fergies is walking, but at 71 nobody will hold that against him.
If Moyes gets the job, I reckon he'll last no more than a year, the stock market will have its final say on any non-success on the playing field.

I hope Wenger calls it a day as well, lets get some new cats in to this exciting level playing field that was once known as the Premier League!

    Good times.

It's not like he's bought a condo in Florida. He's still at the club in an active role, He'll mentor Moyes closely and will still have a massive influence on all things united. It could be wishful thinking on your part because I think Man U will remain the dominant force for a few years to come. Moyes is a world class manager who's built his pedigree on good tactics and man management instead of controlling a fat check book.

I think this thread has a liberal sprinkling of 'wishful thinking' from a supporter of a rival team. I do agree that Moyes is working under the shadow of Ferguson and I do not think there is a manager in the current game that will come anywhere near what he has achieved. I also appreciate that football fans can be incredibly moronic and will slate Moyes when he fails to win 10 trophies in his first 6 seasons! I think Moyes has been very brave to take on this job; he didn't have too - he could have played it safe and stuck with Everton and sat back and continued to take the plaudits for his excellant work at a smaller club (no disespect to Toffee's fans). Finally, although I do not know Moyes personally, I certainly do not, for one moment, see Moyes as some puppet to be manipulated by Ferguson. I also think that United will remember the problems they has with Busby after he retired and went 'upstairs' - he certainly did interfer with the running of the team and they went through a succession of managers that saw them drop to the then 2nd Division.

On the latter point; Gerrez's and reference to Shankly; he certainly tried to influence running of the team after he retired (by turning up daily at the taining ground) and became embittered when the club stepped in and politely told him to leave it to Paisley - very sad but what a good decision by Liverpool.

  12. V.true and its why I think it will be difficult for Moyes. I think DM has the ability to be successful at Old Trafford but he is on a lose-lose start: if he does well and wins games its because Fergie is there to help, if it goes a bit pair shaped its all his fault.

Yes it will work really well, hence saf asked for him to take over
Moyes knew that before and to be fair
    Can you blame him

    Bizarre, even for you.

Congratulations on finishing 3rd by the way. Few hundred million more and you might challenge for second again.

You need a lot more than that to master Europe or Jose. United just don't have that aura in Europe to beat the best
