Clubs will be allowed to use a fourth substitute during extra time in the latter stages of this season's FA Cup. The format, subject to approval from the International Football Association Board, was trialled in the Copa America this summer. The rule will be introduced in the FA Cup from the quarter-final stage. FA chief executive Martin Glenn said the move will add "intrigue and interest", adding that "player welfare" had also been a consideration. "It is important The FA continues to look at how it can further add to the drama and spectacle of a competition loved by millions," he added. The FA's decision to scrap replays from the quarter-final stage was another factor in the move. "With the cup now adopting a straight knockout format from the quarter-finals onwards, the introduction of a fourth substitute in extra time will bring extra intrigue and interest," Glenn said. "Also, from a technical point of view, it will be interesting to see how managers use the chance to make an additional substitution in such high-profile games and the impact it has on the final result." This season's competition gets under way on Friday, 5 August when 184 preliminary matches take place. - Ok it is only in extra time from the quarter final on wards, so maybe we will see this trial used once? Bloody random if you ask me. Do it in the League cup surely? Much more extra time there.
i don't think it makes any odds. I think there is still a shocking assumption small teams won't have enough players to allow this in earlier rounds. like... oh a bug team sends on a millionaire v the carpet baggers... how unfair...
I don't care to be honest. I wish they had made a rule saying one of the subs had to be a home-grown u21 player. (either one of first 3 or 4th sub). That would at least have helped domestic development.
It'd be interesting to see how it'd work. in an ideal world a u21 should be trusted and a developed player so ok to come on i can see the media being two faced and whining about it when some fool like pardew or bruce goes mad and calls it stupid cos they had an injury earlier and are forced to put on some child cos they decided to bring a bad sub choice. "oh the rules cost us the cup"
Don't mind rule too much. Should help teams in lower leagues if they get into ET against teams in much higher division where fitness is a big factor.
there is that but why only from qf? it says to me someone in a blazier decided lower teams wuld have **** 4th sub and whine about it
oh and right now the thing that happens is managers hold the 3rd sub until the end in case of injuries and end up using it ti timewaste in league but in fa cup or league cup they cannot. So all this rule will do is allow every manager time waste using a sub late on knowing that they've another sub in extra time coming.
