I, along with quite a few others, have been wondering for a while why we haven't been starting with 442...and Johnson and Austin upfront. So...when the teams were released today, I was excited to see them both, and sat to follow what I expected to be a goal frenzy as our two front men linked up to good effect. Admittedly we did score 2, and Johnson did assist one for Austin, but I felt they didn't link up all that well throughout the match, and for me, Johnson looked off pace a lot of the time. He seems to have lost his speed and clinical touch that used to be one of his strengths. Fully prepared to be corrected on this, as obviously I could only see what was on the camera, but I wonder if 3 men surging forward (including Phillips who I though did well when he came on) with pace to support Austin may well be the best way to go. That said, we got the win, so no complaints...but certainly not a goal rush. So...was I wrong to yearn after 4-4-2, or did it just not work against Huddersfield for some reason?
I guess the saying 'horses for courses' comes to mind. You never quite know what formation is best until you see the other teams formation and how they use it. 442 will work in some games and not in others. We do need some pace out wide though to open up gaps for the 2 forwards to work on. Just playing a hoof ball to a big guy to head on to the nippy guy will be sussed out quickly and fail.
442 when Ntept (whatever) signs. Unfortunately, AJ is looking like it's time to announce retirement, a joint announcement with his Foolham pal.
I think Austin prefers to play on his own upfront. We definitely looked better when Traore came on for Johnson & at last we had some width with Phillips & Traore.
