We were beating Chelsea 2-1 in the League Cup Final. It was great to see all the Old lads yesterday at the Brit. Big hand to them Just seen this too - http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/1972-LEAG...ia_Football_Programmes_ET&hash=item20c3162ec1
Waddo I had a massive smile when the old un's we're introduced before Kick-off.. I will NEVER forget that day nor should we. Would love to see the whole of that team on our pitch once more Waddo.. Banks, Bloor,.. minus of course the late, the great BIG JOHN.. = LEGEND.
They stood right in front of me Potts as my seat is right by the tunnel front row. Terry Conroy was beaming and I was well made up for him especially has he had been so poorly last year. They all looked so proud. I actually took a few photo's so I'll pop them on here at some point.
Cheers Waddo, T.C. was smiling when he came too the Boothen End, I'm sure he had a tear in his eye's too. I know I had.. looking forward to seeing the photo's. I may get even closer too T.C. and Jimmy G before too long, wink, wink. Will P.M. you when I hear for certain Waddo. If this happens, I will be made up for LIFE! Legend's one and all.
Cheers Potts keep me updated mate. My little one was with me as per and she could not believe that I actually used to watch those guys as a child. It was great to see them all again and remembering what top players they were!
Well Potts, You can imagine how I felt with TC and Greenhoff yesterday! Told Jimmy how pleased I was when he scored that deflected goal for United at Wembley. He admitted he was as well. I thought that Micky Bernard had not really changed at all. It would have been good to see Banksy, Bluto, Smithy and John Mahoney as well. I bet they enjoyed the lunch today.
Waddo and Cris SORRY this is off topic but.. take a looksee at the Norwich board.. read the thread entitled.." It's not wise to out Stoke, Stoke" Jusus wept written by a Norwich fan.. Show's how blinkered, stupid, or just plain daft some fans are. Shall I bite or leave em too it Waddo? Basically, they LOST because we drew them into a longball game... yeah cos we did.
Potts, Have duly commented. Hope they take in the spirit it is offered. I just know the users on this site are much more restrained that elsewhere ie, the Oatcake. What I do not understand is why other supporters get so upset with us when their team play S***e. Is it our fault?
That must have been a wonderful sight when the 'Gods' descended on the Brit, just before kick off!!! I suppose the crowd 'clapped' politely !! 40 years ago, crikey, where did that go??, seems like yesterday.# On THE day, my marriage nearly ended, it was my eldest son's birthday (he was 4) and as a birthday treat, he and his Ma went to the ice show in the old Wembley arena, I went to the game, promising to meet up by the car at 6:30pm, well to cut a long story short, I turned up at approx 8:00 having had one or two beverages (too many), so the birthday meal was OFF, so were all relations for the next few months. When my good lady finally spoke to me, she said don't ever do that again - - I wish Hey ho, happy memories eh?
http://www.stokecityfc.com/page/NewsDetail/0,,10310~2634190,00.html? ALMOST 300 Stoke City supporters filled the Tony Waddington Suite to capacity on Sunday evening... to celebrate the 40-year anniversary of the Club's League Cup Final triumph over Chelsea. The black tie gala dinner at the Britannia Stadium, which was compèred by Nigel Johnson, featured eleven players from the 1971/72 squad - nine of whom starred for the side during the famous 2-1 victory at the old Wembley Stadium. Goal-scoring heroes Terry Conroy and George Eastham were both in attendance, as were the likes of World Cup winning 'keeper Gordon Banks, defensive lynchpin Denis Smith and fan-favourite Jimmy Greenhoff. Chairman Peter Coates and current Potters captain Ryan Shawcross were also there to pay homage to the players who secured the trophy against the Londoners four decades ago. "You saw the reception we got out there, and I'm sure if we had a bigger room I am certain that we would have filled in tonight," Terry Conroy told Stoke City Player. "The affection for the lads who played in '72 is still as strong as it was and long may that continue." Once the players had been individually introduced into the suite by Nigel Johnson at the start of the evening, Peter Coates delivered a short speech in which he led the tributes to Tony Waddington's squad, prior to recalling some of his memories from what he described as 'an historic afternoon'. A luscious four-course silver service meal followed, with extended highlights of the match being screened throughout, before the main event of the evening - a question and answer session with each of the players - took place on stage. Following an hour of hugely entertaining dialogue between Nigel Johnson and the players, a presentation was made by the squad in which they handed over a signed limited edition print -produced by Sid Kirkham, entitled 'Bringing The Cup Home' - firstly to Chairman Peter Coates, and then to Shirley Ritchie, the wife of the late John Ritchie. The curtain was brought down on a memorable evening with all of the players, including modern day star Ryan Shawcross, taking to the stage together to give a rousing rendition of the '72 Cup Final classic 'We'll Be With You'. "It's an honour to be here amongst so many football legends this evening," Shawcross said. "We are all here to rightly remember their achievements of 40 years ago, and celebrate those with them. "The fact that so many supporters have turned up tonight speaks volumes about how big an impact winning the League Cup has had on the Club, and I for one would love to one day go on to emulate them, by walking up those steps at Wembley to lift a trophy." The full list of players in attendance was as follows: Gordon Banks Mike Bernard Terry Conroy George Eastham Jimmy Greenhoff Sean Haslegrave John Mahoney Jackie Marsh Mike Pejic Denis Smith Willie Stevenson
